The SALTO Neo cylinder has been named Product of the Year 2021 in the Security Technology and Access Control category of the S+B Schloss + Beschlagmarkt competition.
The German trade publication presents awards annually recognizing Building Hardware, Handles, Smart Buildings, and Security Technology and Access Control. A top-class jury evaluates each submitted product according to the criteria of innovation, utility/design, digitalisation, and PoS presentation. The product with the highest overall score in its category is designated “Product of the Year.” The SALTO Neo, launched just last year, not only achieved the highest number of points in its category, but also received the best rating from the judges in three of the four criteria.
The jury was made up of industry experts Stephan Schmidt, Managing Director of the German Association of Locks & Building Hardware (FSVB); Denis Masur, Manager of Interkey (Association of European Locksmiths); and Niklas Schulte, Managing Director of the Workgroup Building Hardware (AKB) – all from within the German Hardware and Houseware Association (ZHH); as well as Norman Bartusch from the Smart Home Initiative Germany.
The SALTO Neo is an advanced electronic lock that offers more features and better functionality than any other cylindrical lock. The compact SALTO Neo cylinder is designed for doors where fitting an electronic escutcheon is not possible or required, and can be installed on standard doors, server racks, gates, cabinets, electric switches, etc. IP66 rated and weather-resistant, the SALTO Neo cylinder includes the latest in technology: SALTO Virtual Network (SVN), SVN-Flex, NFC/BLE mobile, and BLUENet Wireless.
The SALTO Neo joins the growing list of SALTO’s award-winning products. In 2020 alone, the online configurator MyLock received the Silver Award at the ARCHITECT’S DARLING AWARDS from Heinze GmbH; the design lock Ælement Fusion received the Bronze PROTECTOR Award from the trade magazine PROTECTOR; and the electronic locker lock XS4 Locker received the New Product of the Year Award from the U.S. magazine Security Today as well as the Silver Award at the GIT Awards from GIT Security + Management Magazine.
London, June 2021 – A door should be an opening, not a barrier. But the reality for the elderly, young and less abled is that inappropriate doors often shut them out. Upgrading to the right door closer can guarantee your premises welcome everyone, no matter their age or dexterity.
Architecture and building design are about creating spaces to enrich lives, yet they can be disconnected from the people most directly impacted. Users may be faced with situations which are uncomfortable and even unusable.
National and supranational regulations often require an accessibility ethos in new-build or retrofit projects, in order to avoid such situations. These increasingly require “inclusive building design”, which should be people centric and create spaces which respond to every user’s needs. These users — whether employees, visitors or customers — will notice the difference. The UK’s BS 8300 standard* and, at the European level, newly minted standard EN 17210:2021 showcase design guidelines for an inclusive built environment**.
The UK’s Ministry of Local Government also funds an Inclusive Environments professional development course***. According to the spec: “Inclusive design is the responsibility of everyone who works in the built environment: planners, those who commission new buildings and places, access consultants, designers, architects, engineers, surveyors, property owners and facilities managers.”
Doors play an important part in our lives. They are the portals between our different worlds. For inclusive building access, the comfortable operation of exterior and interior doors is essential.
When was your building’s last inclusion audit?
Potential barriers to building access and free movement are not always obvious. An inclusion audit, covering building doors and their daily traffic, can help businesses identify problem access points and the means to correct them. Doors which require significant force to push or pull open are one major and recurring problem for inclusive access. At almost any of these — and fire doors especially — installing the right closer will make use safe and effortless, and users more comfortable.
A properly closed door has advantages beyond inclusion. It creates a thermal seal to prevent energy waste, contributing to Nearly Zero Energy Building (nZEB) targets for new and existing properties****. Fully closed doors are better soundproofed, too.
“For security and facility managers, tasked with keeping everyone safe, doors must close securely to work with a building’s access control system. Even the most sophisticated security system will not secure an open door,” explains Andreas Gmelin, Product Management and Business Development Director Door Closers at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEIA. “And, of course, secure closing is required by fire regulations almost everywhere.”
“Yet not all door closers are created equal,” he continues. “Doors fitted with a premium mechanical technology like Cam-Motion and guiderails are pleasant to the eye and comfortable to open. In real-world use, they provide more ergonomic opening for everyone who passes through them — a major benefit for safety and inclusion.”
The Cam-Motion advantage: effortless opening
Unlike traditional rack-and-pinion door closers, Cam technology combined with a guiderail provides the most ergonomic opening — also eliminating projecting link arms with an aesthetically pleasing solution.
Cam-Motion technology does the heavy lifting, so building users don’t have to. Required opening force falls much more rapidly with Cam-Motion than with a traditional rack-and-pinion guiderail. Cam-Motion’s innovative technology mirrors the power of a human elbow, which also reduces sharply as the arm extends.
Cam-Motion Door Closers have independent valves, enabling latch and closing speeds to be set independently. Little fingers (and their parents) will appreciate this extra safeguard. Back-check functionality stops doors damaging walls and surrounding areas. Furthermore, these valves are thermo-resistant: Once all door speeds are set, they stay set — even at extreme temperatures.
Future-proof your solution with an effortless upgrade path
The ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions range of Cam-Motion Door Closers is designed for convenient, effortless upgrading at almost every door. Between them, just two models — the DC500 and DC700 — can equip almost any door, of any size.
A symmetric Cam design allows each model to be fitted to the door or frame, push or pull side. This saves designers’ and architects’ time at specification stage. Aesthetic consistency across the range — for single or double doors, in multiple finishes — promotes clean, appealing interior design.
From an installer’s point of view, a universal concealed mounting plate across the entire ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions portfolio speeds up installation and puts in place an easy, future-proof upgrade path. Any access point’s changing use over the building lifetime is easily accommodated, because switching closers is easy. And a spindle with up to 14mm height adjustment means small measurement errors during installation are quickly corrected.

In 2020 Amazon’s Ring leveraged its brand strength and expanded camera portfolio to double its market share, leapfrogging Arlo and Wyze, and establish itself for the first time as the world’s largest smart home security camera brand according Strategy Analytics’ report, “Smart Home Surveillance Camera Global Market Shares – April 2021.”
Strategy Analytics research finds that the top five home security camera brands globally as of the end of 2020 are, in order: Ring, Arlo, Wyze, Google’s Nest, and interactive security platform provider Alarm.com. These five companies combined to ship more than 12 million cameras, or about 30 percent, of the 42.5 million cameras Strategy Analytics estimates shipped to consumers globally in 2020. The report assesses the market for consumer smart home security cameras, excluding video doorbells and professional surveillance systems. Tier 2 companies D-Link, Eufy, EZVIZ, Kasa, and Resideo rounded out the top 10. Tier 3 companies ADT, Simplisafe, and Vivint showcased how the US interactive security market shapes global consumer smart home camera market shares.
Prior to 2019, big consumer brands like Arlo and Nest, and US interactive security companies ADT and Vivint were entrenched in the top five. However, according to the analysts at Strategy Analytics, the popularity of video monitoring as a self-monitored, subscription-free service and lower-priced-yet-feature-packed offerings from dozens of smaller camera brands have altered the global camera landscape.
Jack Narcotta, Senior Industry Analyst in Strategy Analytics’ Smart Home Strategies advisory service, said, “Ring’s most important addition in the year of the pandemic wasn’t a market-making device, rather it was an aggressive-yet-calculated expansion of its camera portfolio. Ring was no doubt hearing from millions of Ring video doorbell users that they wanted to stay loyal to Ring as they considered purchasing indoor/outdoor cameras. In 2020 it expanded the size of its camera portfolio, with special attention paid to spotlight-equipped outdoor cameras as well as indoor cameras. Ring’s brand strength in video doorbells has had a huge positive halo effect on its camera business.”
Bill Ablondi, Director of Strategy Analytics’ Smart Home Strategies advisory service, added, “Ring’s moves had a ripple effect on the other largest retail-oriented camera brands, particularly Arlo which reported a year-to-year decline in camera units shipped in 2020 while its main competitors Ring, Nest, and Wyze all surged ahead. In the interactive security market, many providers are doubling down on video monitoring capabilities as a cornerstone of their value proposition to consumers. Alarm.com, ADT, and Vivint have excelled at capitalising on demand for video security from their millions of existing subscribers, and Alarm.com and Vivint have excelled at boosting camera attach rates for new subscribers.”
London, May 2021 – It can be a challenge to find an ideal electronic lock for every opening, and then to manage them all within a single, integrated solution. All too often, security procurement involves difficult compromises: A system which works perfectly for one door or department leaves another where the same solution doesn’t quite meet its needs.
At newly built commercial premises in Banská Bystrica, Slovakia, power-tool manufacturer Makita stocks and distributes batteries, and runs wholesale supply logistics. They searched for a single, intuitive system to control every access point — now and in the future.
Yet, as at many other sensitive commercial sites, not every door or opening is the same. Makita needed an access control solution with a comprehensive range of devices — to secure escape doors, entrances, interior doors and more.
“The diversity of access control devices available for the Incedo™ system was a decisive factor,” says Makita’s Richard Cimerman.
Diverse doors and devices managed from a single system
ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions’ Incedo platform connects security software and hardware within a single, seamless ecosystem. The range of Incedo-enabled devices and award-winning door hardware convinced Makita — for this site and for future premises and refurbishments around Slovakia.
The new Banská Bystrica facility now has an Incedo system controlling access through main entrances, fire doors and emergency exit doors, as well as interior doors fitted with Aperio wireless electronic escutcheons. User-friendly Incedo Business software manages and monitors everything together from a single control panel. It filters and restricts employee and visitor access to specific areas of the plant.
The modular, platform-based Incedo solution incorporates wired and wireless door locking devices from across the ASSA ABLOY range; card, token and secure mobile key credentials that can be used interchangeably; and a growing range of third-party security solutions. Should Makita upgrade to Incedo Plus management in the future, their own system could manage CCTV and alarms alongside access and door entry.
When security demands change at Makita Banská Bystrica, their Incedo system can adapt. With Incedo software, Makita can switch between local and Cloud managed solutions whenever they choose. System size is scalable up or down, anytime and on demand, as security needs or space usage change.
Makita Slovakia now has a totally flexible, futureproof Incedo access solution designed to grow with their business.
