Axis Communications Report Highlights Emerging AI Trends in Video Surveillance

Axis Communications has released a new report, “The State of AI in Video Surveillance,” offering fresh insights on how artificial intelligence is transforming safety, security, business intelligence, and operational efficiency. The research shows that AI deployment has surged in the past two years, fueled by higher customer demand, new use cases, and growing awareness of its applications. Mats Thulin, Director AI & Analytics Solutions at Axis, stated, “AI remains one of the most powerful and transformative technologies within the video surveillance industry. This new research reveals that while there are significant opportunities for AI to improve safety and security, operational efficiency and business intelligence, there must be a focus on ethical implementation and meaningful integrations which drive value.”

The report highlights that the shift from on-premise systems to hybrid cloud and edge AI architectures is accelerating, enabling scalability, faster processing, and better bandwidth usage.

Hybrid models are gaining preference, combining edge AI’s real-time processing on cameras with the scalability of the cloud for long-term data storage. Respondents also pointed to the importance of integrating multiple data sources, including video, audio, and environmental data, to enhance situational awareness and deliver actionable insights. Pairing video with audio analysis, for example, can allow faster and more accurate emergency responses. Another key finding is that facial recognition is gaining wider adoption in many countries, supported by new regulations clarifying its ethical and responsible use.

Experts predict its continued growth, but stress that alignment with privacy rules and transparency remain essential. The study combines qualitative interviews with AI experts from the Axis global partner network and survey data from distributors, partners, and end customers in more than 60 countries. Together, these findings reflect a rapidly evolving video surveillance industry where AI is both a driver of innovation and a subject of ethical debate. Omdia’s 2025 Video Surveillance & Analytics Database Report shows the company holding the #1 position worldwide for video surveillance software, as well as leading the combined category of video surveillance software and Video Surveillance as a Service (VSaaS).

The report highlights the growing influence of Genetec’s cloud strategy, with its Security Center SaaS platform—introduced in mid-2024—driving strong adoption and securing a place among the world’s top ten VSaaS vendors. In the Americas, the largest and fastest-growing VSaaS market, Genetec ranks #4. The company is also seeing increased uptake of its unified cloud-based video surveillance and Access Control as a Service (ACaaS) solutions, as customers seek integrated deployment options.

Regionally, Genetec continues to hold the top spot in the Americas for both video surveillance and combined video surveillance/VSaaS categories—marking its 14th consecutive year in this position. It is ranked #2 in EMEA, where it posted the highest market share growth among the top ten vendors, and #3 in Asia Pacific (excluding China).

“The video surveillance market continues to see steady global growth, driven by rising security demands and faster adoption of new technologies,” said Scott Foley, Senior Analyst, Physical Security at Omdia. “According to our research, Genetec remains a consistent global leader in the industry for video surveillance software, maintaining top market share and addressing customer needs with innovative products that meet the evolving needs of organizations worldwide.”

Novaira Insights’ findings echo this leadership status, naming Genetec the global market leader in total video surveillance software and service agreements, and noting its high growth in both hardware and software segments.

“The Genetec philosophy has always been to offer customers more choice, not less,” said Christian Morin, Vice President of Product Engineering and Chief Security Officer at Genetec. “Organizations deserve the flexibility to deploy solutions exactly the way they want, whether it’s on-premises, in the cloud, or a combination of both approaches… without ever being locked into proprietary systems.”

With over 25 years of innovation in open, scalable, and cybersecure systems, Genetec continues to focus on customer-driven development, delivering technologies that enhance daily security operations while protecting privacy and ensuring long-term adaptability.

New Surveillance Cameras Installed in Čakovec City Park

As part of its ongoing efforts to enhance public safety, the City of Čakovec has installed new surveillance cameras at the main entrances to Perivoj Zrinskih. The cameras have been strategically positioned, with locations selected based on a prior security risk assessment. Perivoj Zrinskih, which surrounds the Old Town of Čakovec—a medieval fortress and today the seat of the Međimurje County Museum—is one of the city’s most important cultural, historical, and natural landmarks, and a popular gathering place for residents.

This initiative is part of a broader strategy to strengthen public safety, with particular emphasis on protecting children, visitors, and public property. Access to recorded footage is strictly controlled and permitted only to officially authorized personnel, while the police may obtain footage solely through a formal warrant, ensuring full protection of citizens’ privacy.

The project was carried out by local company Pegasus d.o.o. from Čakovec, in accordance with public procurement procedures. With a total investment of €10,500, the initiative represents a significant step forward in creating a safer and more organized urban environment. The City of Čakovec also plans to expand the system to cover the entire park, recognizing its high visitor frequency and strategic importance.
