Big changes imminent for smart home camera market

Some of the largest smart home surveillance camera brands – Arlo, Blink, Nest, Ring, and Wyze – remain in control of the surveillance camera market, though a sea change is imminent, according to the latest research published in Strategy Analytics’ Smart Home Camera Market Analysis and Forecast – October 2021.

As differentiators other than the lowest camera selling price begin to fade for most brands it is becoming clear that device-only business models will become unsustainable. The hardware-first business model that has spurred tremendous growth in this smart home device segment for brands such as Wyze, Xiaomi, Reolink, and Eufy, as well as dozens of Chinese companies over the last five years is showing signs of winding down. Companies already well down the path towards software, such as Amazon (Blink and Ring), Arlo, and Google (Nest), will further entrench themselves at the top of the market, as well as enjoy a head start on earning them new customers and protecting their installed bases. Cameras from brands that either cannot or choose not to enhance their software offerings will be viewed as commodities, at best relegating these brands to the sidelines, at worst knocking them out of the camera market altogether.

Bill Ablondi, Director, Smart Home Strategies, added, “Strategy Analytics’ research into the consumer smart home surveillance camera market shows specifications, such as 1080p or greater video resolution, advanced night vision capabilities, and integration with digital assistant ecosystems are still important to consumers, though to a much lesser degree than in the past. Competitors in the smart home camera arena know that leadership in this market will soon be based on software and services more advanced than simply enabling cloud storage or remote viewing. The challenge ahead for camera companies will be determining how to successfully transition from selling camera hardware to selling security, monitoring, and safety features.”

Teledyne Flir strengthens critical infrastructure perimeter portfolio

Teledyne Flir has recently released new additions to its perimeter security portfolio for critical infrastructure – the Elara R-Series Commercial Ground Security Radars and the Triton FH-Series Multispectral Fixed Cameras.

A first for Teledyne Flir, the Elara R-Series is the ideal commercial radar system for industrial commercial applications, increasing detection coverage, auto-tracking, dynamic mapping and position intelligence of intruders. Part of the Teledyne Flir premium Triton family of cameras, the Triton FH-Series delivers both intrusion detection and video verification through its high-resolution thermal and visible imaging capabilities. These features plus the ability to capture vital details using 4K imagery enables security personnel to properly identify and assess situations, significantly improving response time.

The Elara R-Series introduces compact ground radars built to work within larger security systems to provide advanced warning of both human and vehicle intrusions beyond the fence line, while continuously tracking and precisely locating multiple targets. This series consists of two models, each designed with regional certifications in mind: the Elara R-290, which is compliant with United States Federal Communications Commission (FCC) guidelines, and the Elara R-190, which is Conformité Européenne (CE)-compliant for Europe. The Elara R-290 features a 90-degree field of view, up to a 400-metre range for vehicle tracking, a 200-metre range for human tracking, and provides wide-area protection as well as situational awareness beyond the fence line; the Elara R-190 offers a 300-metre range for vehicles and 125 metres for humans. These products are designed for reliable detection in all weather and lighting conditions. The radars’ auto-tracking feature helps to direct pan-tilt-zoom surveillance sensors in the right direction; the radars also help expand coverage area and significantly minimize false alarms. In addition, both models can provide security personnel with precise, real-time data, 24/7.

The Triton FH-Series are ruggedised, multispectral fixed cameras that integrate industry-leading thermal imaging for detection with 4K visible imaging to help identify intruders in harsh perimeter security settings. Critical infrastructure facilities will benefit from technological advancements, such as highly-accurate convolutional neural network (CNN)-based video analytics for both thermal and visible spectrums, which minimize false alarms and aid in geo-locating threats for superior situational awareness. The on-board scheduling tool gives the operator the ability to select the type of analytics used to make detections based on time of day, business hours, and seasonality. Additionally, radiometric versions of the Triton FH-Series can be used for early fire detection applications to help critical sites operate safely and efficiently.

“Teledyne Flir is committed to equipping security directors with technologies that empower them to protect their facilities and personnel at mission critical sites,” said Kai Moncino, Global Business Development Manager, Security at Teledyne Flir. “The Elara R-Series and Triton FH-Series are built to enhance perimeter protection, providing accurate detection and alerting of threats. As with all of our new products, the Elara R-Series and Triton FH-Series are designed with the latest cyber-hardening features for added security and peace of mind.”

Safety first: how does Partizan STD-2MP check COVID certificates?

Multifunctional terminal Partizan STD-2MP helps businesses to work in a pandemic. At many European places where visitors need to measure temperatures and verify COVID certificates, the device has already shown itself to be at its best. Due diligence is quick and hassle-free.

The “quarantine” rules are constantly changing, so Partizan developers continue to expand the capabilities of STD-2MP. Of the most recent innovations, it is worth highlighting:

  • Updating the database of European certificates
  • Introduction of additional indication of the check mode

What does it mean? Now, when verifying a COVID certificate, STD-2MP will generate three types of color notifications. Here are the situations:

  • If someone tries to use an invalid certificate, STD-2MP will signal with the red light.
  • If the certificate is valid but the visitor or employee does not present an ID, the STD-2MP will give a yellow notification. This means the certificate is in order. But whether it belongs to the one who showed it – is still a question.
  • Finally, if a valid certificate and passport are presented and their details match, the STD-2MP will give a green notification. All is OK!

The terminal will additionally send reports with PUSH notifications to Partizan mobile application and letters to the admin’s email.

In addition to the verification of certificates, Partizan STD-2MP is able to remotely measure the body temperature of visitors. This significantly saves time at checkpoints. The device also detects the presence of a mask and is able to memorize 22,400 faces and 100,000 events. An important option if you need to keep track of visits or create a database of guests/staff.

Few people like anti-COVID constraints! But realities demand responsibility from us if we want to return to normal life as soon as possible. Partizan STD-2MP terminal is one solution that will allow most types of businesses to comply with government regulations and remain alive.

Partizan specialists continue to work on expanding the STD-2MP functionality. Follow the news!

Flexible workspaces can thrive on the versatility of Incedo™ Business access control

London, November 2021 – Following a change in employment practices created by the pandemic, many office-based employees now follow a hybrid schedule, working where they are needed or find convenient. The fast-growing use of flexible offices and co-working spaces is testament to this emerging trend. With employees coming and going as they please, a change in how security and access control are managed is an urgent but overlooked aspect many firms are just waking up to.

Clockwise is a UK and European provider of flexible office space for entrepreneurs and established businesses*. The company’s expanding offering includes contemporary offices, meeting rooms and shared workspaces across multiple cities.

Any business which relies on flexibility places high demands on door security and access control. Clockwise needs a broad choice of electronic devices to secure meeting rooms, private offices, communal spaces and main entrances, which may not all require the same lock type.

The office space demands of a start-up, freelance co-worker or growing SMB can change at any time, so Clockwise offer a range of membership levels and packages. Access management must be able to adapt and change as fast as Clockwise clients’ needs.

Because tenants come and go frequently, Clockwise facility managers need tailoring of user access rights to be as easy as possible. Clockwise’s own spaces and portfolio may also evolve: Any access system must be able to scale instantly up or down.

How flexibly Clockwise can deliver for their clients is essential to growing in such a competitive market.

Incedoä Business: the right solution for flexible access control

The range of Incedo-enabled devices and door hardware — managed by simple Cloud-based software — convinced Clockwise to choose ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions’ Incedo Business for all their premises. This platform-based access solution connects security software and hardware within a single, future-proofed ecosystem.

The diversity of Incedo-enabled devices enables Clockwise to select the ideal electronic lock for every opening in their properties. Internal private office doors, “Zoom rooms” and meeting rooms — as well as communal area doors and entrance/exits — are now secured with wireless access control devices from the Incedo Business range.

Incedo’s flexible system management options help Clockwise to operate access control with maximum efficiency. Administrators quickly create groups with tailored access for specific doors.

Access permissions may also be time-limited, which is perfect for meeting room bookings or for facilitating access hours for different membership options: Private desk members get 24/7 admission, whereas hot-desk membership only allows entry during office hours.

According to Clockwise: “The flexibility to create groups and the ability to remotely update cards both work really well for our business.”

Dahua helps reinforce safety at EPA Food

Dahua Technology recently designed a video surveillance and control solution for Empresa Panamena de Alimentos (EPA), a processed food company in Panama.  The risks brought by the pandemic were the drivers for the management to consider the implementation of a new system to sustain efficient safety and security management and operation over staff and premises.

Empresa Panamena de Alimentos is a leading company in the processed food industry in Panama, founded in 2012 and owns production plants and warehouses in the capital city as well as agencies around the country.

As a food company, the operations of the company need to be under caution especially during the pandemic. It was necessary to implement multiple access controls in the facilities. With multiple plants located around the nation and accelerated growth, a centralised monitoring system for all equipment, alert management and user reports was required.

The solution applied at EPA’s facilities integrates various electronic security systems under a single platform and was evaluated based on the company’s needs. “Currently, 480 Dahua devices have been deployed. Amongst them are different models of cameras, access control systems, and automatic number-plate recognition products. AI-based cameras enhance the level of personnel protection. Everything is monitored by a DSS Express server in the main plant,” commented Luis Araujo, Manager of Infrastructure and Telecommunications of the Secutec Panama group.

Every day, more than 800 employees enter EPA facilities nationwide, the access control system allows a faster and safer automated entry of the staff and their cars. Apart from automatic number-plate recognition (ANPR) devices, more than 20 access controllers (ASI7213X-T1) were installed in main offices for temperature monitoring and attendance management. In addition, three Pro Network Video Recorders (NVR5864-4KS2) were also adopted. With a powerful processor, they have the capability of 4K resolution processing and high recording quality.

In Dahua’s solution, perimeter protection and access control are both realised. “We have had Dahua equipment for 7 years, it is a brand that has been of great help to our safety. It has contributed to continuous and steady operations throughout the pandemic,” said Guillermo Figueroa, EPA’s Safety and Control Manager.

Bosch plans to acquire Protec Fire & Security in the UK

Bosch Building Technologies is planning to acquire Protec Fire and Security Group Ltd., headquartered in Nelson, UK – one of the leading system integrators for security and fire detection technology with an innovative product portfolio.

Protec employs around 1,100 employees at its nine European locations in the UK and the Netherlands and generated sales of GBP 125 million (around 142 million Euro) in the fiscal year 2021 according to preliminary figures. “With the acquisition of Protec, Bosch Building Technologies aims to expand its business and grow further in the European market,” says Thomas Quante, president of Bosch Building Technologies. It has been agreed that the purchase price will not be disclosed. The acquisition is subject to approval by the relevant antitrust authorities.

“With Bosch, we found a great partner who values our history, brand and our extraordinary team. I believe this cooperation will open up great opportunities for our company as well as our employees and lead into a successful future,” says Barrie Russell, founder and chairman of Protec Fire and Security Group Ltd. The company’s services and products are used in numerous sectors, for example in industry, airports and railway stations.

Alongside the UK, the Netherlands is another important market for Protec, accounting for the largest share of its overseas sales. Here, the company is mainly active under the brand Hacousto Protec. “In the Dutch market, Protec and its complementary customer and competence structure is an excellent expansion of Bosch Building Technologies’ current business. The acquisition will significantly strengthen our joint market position in the security and fire detection technology sector, create a broader service offering for our customers and expand the product portfolio in the Security & Life Safety area,” adds Quante.
