Securitas and IBM Agree New Vested Partnership Strategy

Securitas and IBM have entered into, what is thought to be the first global Vested security agreement, shifting from a transactional contract to a collaborative, win-win partnership.

Together with IBM, Securitas has established the world’s first global Vested security agreement, a strategic partnership that could have a significant impact on the industry.

The Vested business model – developed by a team led by Kate Vitasek at the University of Tennessee – is an innovative approach that turns the conventional buy-sell relationship into a partnership focused on shared success, transparency, and common goals.

As Kate puts it, this approach aims to turn value exchange into value creation, reimagining contracts as frameworks for collaboration. Importantly, it also builds into the contract flexibility and opportunity for innovation.

“Moving away from transactional relationships into this Vested methodology gives us bi-lateral flexibility,” says IBM Chief Security Officer and VP of Corporate Security Royce Curtin. “It allows us to specify requirements to secure the enterprise and our people, and it gives Securitas flexibility to deliver those requirements using a combination of assets – including physical guarding, security technology, or various other incident response tactics.”

This type of partnership presents tremendous potential in the security industry, in particular, where traditional contracts can inadvertently prioritise price-per-guard metrics over holistic safety and security. In a Vested business model, key performance indicators (KPIs) developed by both companies primarily focus on the health of the relationship, and a governance team representing both sides track progress against these shared goals.

Amsterdam’s World Trade Center streamlines operations with digital access

London, October 2024 – World Trade Center (WTC) Amsterdam is home to more than 300 companies. The commitment of its security team to providing a safe working environment in WTC’s fixed and flexible offices goes without saying. However, building managers wanted more from their access solution.

 More than just an office space, WTC Amsterdam has complementary onsite facilities including childcare, a gym, physiotherapy clinic, bar/café, dry cleaning service and more. All its facilities must be cleaned and serviced regularly: they sought a more time-efficient way to manage the many contractors and suppliers who come and go every day.

They also hoped a modern digital solution would provide better oversight of movement around the building, including usage data to improve maintenance scheduling. For convenience during installation and day-to-day management they targeted a wire-free solution – for simpler, less disruptive switching of 1,000 doors from mechanical locks to digital access – and intuitive management, allowing for easy changing of individual access authorizations, even at the last minute.

With all these criteria in mind, WTC Amsterdam managers decided on ASSA ABLOY’s smart key digital access system, eCLIQ. They upgraded doors from mechanical to digital access simply by swapping the existing cylinder for an eCLIQ device. Doors are unlocked by battery-powered user smart keys, with a typical battery lifespan of 10 years.

“Providing these doors with wired access control would be a huge job and become costly. Instead, we opted for the eCLIQ solution,” explains Sander Borggreve, Facility Manager at WTC Amsterdam.

Concrete improvements in operations

The ROI in terms of workflow benefits has been significant. “Granting temporary controlled access to third parties is very easy with the eCLIQ system. We can set access for a certain period of time, but we can also revoke it at any time,” says Sander.

Scheduling is further simplified by storing keys with a Traka key management system. After removing a key from the cabinet, authorized team members enter it into the adjacent eCLIQ Wall Programming Device. In seconds, the key is issued with its fine-grained access rights – covering both door-by-door and time validity.

With the eCLIQ system, WTC Amsterdam gained not only control but also insights into usage and user flows. This data now informs maintenance and operations, reducing the overall Total Cost of Ownership for the solution.

“eCLIQ works very pleasantly in practice. My employees are very satisfied with how the keys work,” says Rutger Barendse of D&B The Facility Group, who provide security staff for WTC Amsterdam.

Passwordless Authentication Market Valued at Over $55 Billion by 2030

The global passwordless authentication market size is expected to reach USD 55.70 billion by 2030, growing at promising 17.1% CAGR, according to a new report by Grand View Research, Inc. Passwordless authentication is a security procedure that uses unique biological traits of a person to validate their authenticity. The company seeks to eliminate OTP-related fraud in transactions across use cases across business/industry domains, including e-commerce deliveries, by making it available in all Indian languages and roughly 20,000 dialects.

 Increasing risk of data theft

 Furthermore, due to the increasing number of incidences of data theft around the world, passwordless authentication has gained popularity. Data theft issues in devices such as computers, cellphones, and tablets have increased the requirement for protection beyond passwords. fingerprint sensors and facial recognition are ways modern gadgets can be secured to prevent data theft.

For instance, by way of an example the analysts cite that in August 2022, Forgerock, an international identity and access management software business, established strategic cooperation with Israeli software company Secret Double Octopus. New SIA Initiative Helps Military Veterans in Security

The Security Industry Association (SIA) has appointed eight industry leaders and veterans, led by Jeff Huggins, Chair of Assa Abloy Door Security Solutions, to serve as Advisory Board members for SIA Veterans in Security, a new community focused on the issues and concerns of veterans and active military members who are in, or are interested in joining, the security industry.

Digital access answers the healthcare sector’s evolving physical security challenges

Security stakes are high at healthcare premises. Patients deserve privacy and safety, while the buildings themselves must be welcoming spaces. They remain open beyond the usual “office hours” yet the protection of drugs and confidential data is more critical than you would find in most offices. Even a seemingly minor breach requires investigation.

All devices integrate natively with the central system. Wired and wireless access points at are managed together, with real-time logs, remote door opening and free time-slot management.

“Having just a single badge — and not having to carry around heavy keys — has been a major advantage for us,” says Béatrice Dequidt, Health Executive at CHMS. “We have implemented internal HR management procedures, creating badges that are automatically integrated into ARD’s operating software,” adds Alain Gestin, CHMS’s IT Systems Architect.

Managing contractors efficiently with programmable digital keys

Programmable smart keys put the advantages of digital access into a familiar form: they reinvent the key for the 21st century, making it equipped to implement modern access management.

At the Marin Hospital in Hendaye, mechanical technology made it difficult to track who was accessing sensitive areas like treatment rooms and medicine stores. Keys and passes issued to employees and contractors were another source of risk. They often remained in circulation beyond their approved use period. To trace staff and external contractor movements into sensitive areas, a digital access system with inbuilt audit trail capability was essential.

Marin’s security team gradually rolled it out to all care and logistics buildings, including drug stores, labs and other sensitive or confidential areas. Wire-free eCLIQ offers easy installation without the expense or disruption of laying cabling. An installer simply swaps the old mechanical cylinder for an eCLIQ one.

External service providers now use an intelligent key which automatically expires after a pre-defined period. This is much safer than relying on a contractor to return their mechanical key every time.

“The choice of this solution is based on reliability and simplicity of implementation for a site that covers 11 hectares,” explains Yves Bourdon, the hospital’s Security Director. “It is the only solution that can equip more than 1,500 doors with quick and wireless installation.”
