Worldwide Semi-conductor Market Suffers Historic Downturn

Worldwide semiconductor revenue in 2023 totaled $533 billion, a decrease of 11.1% from 2022, according to preliminary results by Gartner. However, Nvidia heavily outperformed the market and moved into the top five spot for the first time, due, according to Gartner, to its activities in the AI market.

“While the cyclicality in the semiconductor industry was present again in 2023, the market suffered a difficult year with memory revenue recording one of its worst declines in history,” said Alan Priestley, VP Analyst at Gartner.

“The underperforming market also negatively impacted several semiconductor vendors. Only 9 of the top 25 semiconductor vendors posted revenue growth in 2023, with 10 experiencing double-digit declines,” continued Priestley.

The combined semiconductor revenue of the top 25 semiconductor vendors, according to Gartner, declined 14.1% in 2023, accounting for 74.4% of the market, down from 77.2% in 2022.

Following the underperformance of memory vendors in 2023, the ranking of the top 10 semiconductor vendors changed year-over-year, but with Intel retaining the number one spot from Samsung, after two years in second position. Gartner information shows that Intel’s 2023 revenue totalled $48.7 billion while Samsung’s revenue reached $39.9 billion.

The Nvidia 2023 semiconductor revenue grew 56.4% to total $24 billion, propelling the company into the top five for the first time ever. This is due to its leading position in the artificial intelligence (AI) silicon market.

Additionally, ST Microelectronics moved up three slots to secure the number 8 spot – the same position it held in 2019. Its revenue increased 7.7% in 2023, largely driven by a strong position in the automotive segment.

Memory revenue declined 37% in 2023

Revenue for memory products declined 37% in 2023, experiencing the biggest decline of all the segments in the semiconductor market. “Smartphones, PCs and servers, three of the largest segments for DRAM and NAND, faced weaker than expected demand and excess channel inventory, especially in the first half of 2023,” said Joe Unsworth, VP Analyst at Gartner. In 2023, DRAM revenue declined 38.5% to total $48.4 billion and NAND flash revenue decreased from 37.5% to $36.2 billion.

Nonmemory revenue fared better and declined 3% in 2023. The market witnessed weaker demand and excess channel inventory negatively impacted the segment throughout the year.

“Unlike the memory vendors, most non-memory vendors experienced a relatively benign pricing environment in 2023,” said Unsworth. “The demand for non-memory semiconductors for AI applications was the strongest growth driver, with the automotive sector (especially electric vehicles), defense and aerospace industries, also outperforming most other application segments.”

Openings Studio™ is door specification and inspection software you can access from anywhere

London, February 2024 – Specifying, surveying, installing, inspecting and maintaining doors requires a vast amount of information. It is vital that all technical data is trustworthy and timely, a task made harder by the diversity of project stakeholders who are inevitably involved. Now a single software subscription, for PC, tablet and smartphone, can help you marshal all information across the whole life-cycle of a building without hassle — another case where digitalization delivers concrete benefits.

Openings Studioä is a cloud-based, customizable configuration tool for the creation, visualization, modification and management of door openings. This unique application provides access to complete door information at all stages — from product concept to aftercare — and is available via a simple subscription for desktop and mobile devices.

“With Openings Studio, you no longer need to rely on paper or spreadsheets to manage doorset data — the complete door system, frame and related hardware information that building projects require,” explains Marc Ameryckx, BIM Development Manager at ASSA ABLOY Opening Solutions EMEIA.

“It’s all digitally managed in one place over the life of the building, which helps reduce costs and saves everyone’s time.”

Delivering concrete benefits to every project stakeholder

“Openings Studio keeps a single, authoritative digital resource updated and transparent. It’s then available to every stakeholder at any point in the building’s life-cycle. The mobile app makes it easily accessible for everyone involved from wherever they are, even if they have no data connection,” adds Marc.

Project owners, designers and contractors all benefit at the start of a building’s life. Distributors and locksmiths can consult and update the digital resource when it is time for door installation or retrofitting. Site staff can access specification data for every opening via intelligent tags and QR codes — which again, saves time and cuts mistakes. Maintenance teams and inspectors can rely on Openings Studio as a living digital resource when they need authoritative door information to do their jobs properly.

“Specifying, ordering, installing, documenting and compliance checking for doors are all simplified with Openings Studio,” he says.

Openings Studio simplifies door management at every stage

Openings Studio is already deployed all over the world as a specification and ordering tool for building projects. It can deliver detailed door solution specifications directly to popular packages such as Revit® and ARCHICAD ®, for example. Openings Studio updates everything with the latest design or specification information, drawing on a detailed database with colour, size, thickness and certifications for every product; as well as installation and compliance information, Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) and more.

This unified digital thread which connects all project partners minimizes the error rate in door deliveries. It eliminates the confusion which comes with stakeholders having to juggle multiple versions of documents. Openings Studio can help contractors to calculate costs accurately and prevents them ordering doors with the wrong functions, bringing financial and project management benefits.

Over a building lifetime, Openings Studio remains current and accessible. Handover from construction to facility management is smoother. Everyone working on the building, now and in the future, finds the information they need quickly within Openings Studio, and can share it easily. This authoritative resource informs site audits, health and safety policy, maintenance or service schedules, refurbishment and more.

Major benefits from the concept stage to later in the life-cycle

On a large project for Østre Landsret, the High Court for Denmark’s Eastern region, Openings Studio was the tool which underpinned door meetings, ensuring efficient decision-making and component delivery for every door closer, lock and cylinder.

According to Per Løvstad, Sales Manager at SWEDOOR JW Denmark*, “cooperation consists of a total review of the entire door project, door by door, so that our mutual customer feels safe and secure that the doors and the entire package fit together. I can only recommend this collaboration to anyone who has to go through larger projects with doors and fittings.”

At the opposite end of the building cycle, Openings Studio maximizes the effectiveness of fire door inspection by safeguarding a reliable, up-to-date source of specification info. Doorview, who conduct independent fire inspections in the London area, looked for a solution which would streamline interactions with customers.

“The Openings Studio app allows us to instantly share fire door inspection reports with our clients,” says Doorview’s Jody Purcell. The mobile app equips inspectors with powerful, speedy and transparent reporting tools by leveraging the same information from the beginning of the design phase through to maintenance of the completed structure.

The app also helps Doorview implement a remedial action list, which reassures the client that their building is compliant and safe. Maintenance staff instantly upload a photo when any compliance refits are complete. Working digitally with Openings Studio assures the transparency of this important process.

“With Openings Studio, at every stage of the building cycle, openings are made easy,” says Marc.

At a busy new rail station, robust Cam-Motion® Door Closers help keep staff-only areas separate and secure

London, January 2024 – Only one UK mainline station has ever been built specifically for a higher-education institution: University Station, Birmingham, inaugurated in 1978. In 2023 it was completely reimagined to meet the needs of 21st-century passengers and railway staff.

The rebuild’s aim was to improve facilities; offer greater passenger capacity; and boost ease of use, including barrier-free access for all. To achieve these goals, the new station required certified doorsets to meet stringent standards, including for fire safety.

Firstly, all key openings needed a durable closing solution which is equipped to deal with high levels of daily traffic. Passenger numbers are expected to grow significantly over the next 40 years*.

When it comes to a building like University Station that has a high footfall, we needed a safe and secure solution for the public that could withstand heavy traffic,” explains Phil Wood MCIOB, Senior Project Manager at the project’s building contractor, VolkerFitzpatrick.

Their doors and door technology must combine comfortable user movement with secure closing. Their choice of door supplier was critical: Project managers wanted a supplier with experience providing specification support to contractors and architects, as well as an installation service to ensure all doors and door closers are deployed accurately.

At several openings, Cam-Motion Door Closers were chosen for their comfortable access and reliable closing. The new station is a busy public space but also has restricted, staff-only areas. The door solution helps to keep employees safe at work without slowing down their daily work.

Specification and installation support from ASSA ABLOY

ASSA ABLOY’s specification team worked with architects to create an accurate door hardware schedule for VolkerFitzpatrick. They prepared specification briefs and complete door solutions for internal timber and external steel doors.

Furthermore, “ASSA ABLOY helped us with their two-pronged approach, not only specifying a compliant solution but also fitting the doors,” adds Phil Wood.

In combination with ASSA ABLOY Safeguard doors – which resist forced entry via mechanical or powered tools – the fire-compliant doorset was completed with an ASSA ABLOY DC500A Cam-Motion Door Closer.

The advantage of Cam-Motion technology

Door closers with ASSA ABLOY’s unique Cam-Motion technology shut reliably behind everyone who passes through. This is critical to separating station public areas from staff-only zones.

The installer can set individual latch and closing speeds, so high closing force works alongside easy opening. And because valves are independent, metal and thermo-resistant, these settings remain until intentionally modified – even at extreme temperatures and faced with wind pressure or air suction.

These door closers also maximize specification and installation flexibility. A symmetric cam design allows fitting to either frame or door, and on hinge or non-hinge side; no compromises or installer workarounds are needed.

In meeting important accessibility criteria, they also do not sacrifice durability or fire resistance. All ASSA ABLOY Cam-Motion devices are tested to EN 1154 standard for fire and smoke protection.
