Delivering 7×24 Speed: JD Logistics’ Wireless Network Success

JD Logistics (JDL), a subsidiary of the Chinese e-commerce giant JD.com, officially became an independent group in 2017 and was listed on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange in 2021. As a leading technology-driven supply chain solutions and logistics service provider, JDL is committed to “leading global efficient circulation and sustainable development.” It is renowned for its highly efficient, precise, secure, and reliable services, exemplified by its advanced “Asia No.1” smart logistics parks with a daily order processing capacity of over 1 million.

Scaling Challenges at JD Logistics

These smart warehouses leverage a multitude of intelligent devices, including sorting robots, smart scanning equipment, and intelligent picking systems, to significantly boost order processing and sorting capabilities. However, the seamless coordination and high performance of these intelligent devices fundamentally rely on a stable and reliable wireless network. JD Logistics encountered several key challenges:

Wireless Network Stability and Reliability

The vast number of mobile and fixed wireless terminals (e.g., PDAs, AGVs, MES, CNC, PLC) within warehouses presented significant challenges. Poor wireless roaming and unreliable connections led to high packet loss rates and delayed shipments, which could be detrimental in the competitive logistics sector.

Multi-Level Network Architecture Management

Managing a complex, multi-level network architecture presented a significant challenge. As JD Logistics scaled, the need for efficient and unified management across headquarters, regional branches, and numerous warehouses became paramount. Robust O&M tools were essential to maintain network health and performance across the distributed environment.

O&M Efficiency

O&M Efficiency was crucial for JD Logistics. They needed to simplify operations and maintenance, accelerate wireless network deployment cycles, and achieve real-time monitoring and intelligent diagnostics of network operations.

Ensuring Continuous Connectivity: A Redundant Network Design

To address the challenges of scaling their smart logistics network, JD Logistics implemented Ruijie’s comprehensive wireless solution. This involved strategies to ensure high reliability, deliver a superior wireless experience, and simplify network management and operations, resulting in significant improvements in efficiency, stability, and overall performance.

Achieving Wireless Reliability: A Multi-Tiered Approach

To ensure high availability, a multi-tiered Access Controller (AC) architecture was implemented, with a central AC at headquarters and branch ACs at regional sites. In case of a branch AC failure, the central AC automatically takes over, maintaining network uptime. Automatic blind spot compensation ensures uninterrupted service by dynamically adjusting AP power.

Unlocking Seamless Connectivity with Wi-Fi 6

Tailored device deployment strategies, incorporating Wi-Fi 6 technology and deploying over 30,000 Ruijie wireless APs, significantly enhanced wireless access across diverse environments like offices and warehouses. This ensured high-speed, stable connections, enabling smooth operation of mobile robots and streamlining cargo sorting and outbound processes, contributing to improved efficiency and throughput.

Centralized Management: Simplifying Network Operations

Centralized management enabled unified control of the entire wireless network from headquarters, streamlining operations across JD Logistics’ 1000+ smart warehouses. This reduced O&M time and resources, allowing IT staff to focus on strategic initiatives. The simplified approach optimized network performance.

With the new redundant and reliable wireless network, JD Logistics experienced significant improvements across key performance areas. These included enhanced operational stability, increased warehouse efficiency, and streamlined network management, contributing to a more robust logistics infrastructure.
