HMF Smart Solutions presents convergent solutions for public safety in Europe

In a world where public safety increasingly depends on reliable and flexible communication, the importance of modern, mission-critical infrastructures is growing rapidly. Police, fire, rescue, and civil protection organizations are under mounting pressure to respond effectively in complex emergency situations. Traditional radio technology alone is no longer sufficient. Forward-looking solutions combine proven systems with the possibilities of new broadband technologies.

One company consistently building this bridge is HMF Smart Solutions GmbH. Based in Bad Münder, Germany, HMF has been developing customized communication solutions for safety-critical applications for over 40 years. With projects across Europe and beyond, HMF is a trusted provider of Professional Mobile Radio (PMR), particularly based on TETRA, as well as innovative LTE/5G Mission Critical Services (MCX).

Convergent communication: TETRA meets MCX

At the heart of HMF’s current portfolio is a convergent communication solution that unites the strengths of two worlds: the mature, highly reliable TETRA technology for mission-critical voice communication, and the capabilities of LTE/5G for broadband data and video services. This hybrid concept allows emergency organizations to design their communications flexibly, depending on their needs:

  • TETRA remains the first choice for robust group communication, high availability, secure voice channels, and direct radio connections even without network coverage (DMO).
  • MCX services, in line with the 3GPP standard, complement this foundation with video streaming, data transmission, geo-information, and multimedia applications in real time.

The result is a platform that enables seamless interoperability between radio devices and modern broadband end devices such as smartphones, tablets, or bodycams. This allows fire departments, police, and rescue services to exchange information not only faster, but also more comprehensively—a decisive advantage in critical situations where every second counts.

ACCESSNET®-T IP: Scalable TETRA infrastructure

A key component of HMF’s portfolio is the ACCESSNET®-T IP TETRA infrastructure, one of the most flexible and scalable platforms on the market. It is suitable for both small local networks and nationwide radio infrastructures. Authorities and organizations can tailor the network architecture precisely and expand it step by step—without interrupting operations.

Key features of ACCESSNET®-T IP include:

  • High scalability — from a few base stations to nationwide networks.
  • Redundancy and reliability through modular architecture.
  • Open interfaces for integrating other technologies.
  • Support for hybrid networks where TETRA and LTE/5G work seamlessly together.
  • High availability and cost efficiency.

An example of this advanced technology is the DIB-R5 outdoor base station, which HMF will present at the upcoming Romanian Security Summit: robust, powerful, and optimized for critical operating conditions.

Mobile communication: handheld and mobile radios

Beyond infrastructure and systems, HMF offers an extensive portfolio of mobile devices. This includes handheld radios such as the PT590, known for their ergonomic design, intuitive operation, strong performance, and rugged construction. The range is complemented by mobile radios and third-party solutions that can be seamlessly integrated into existing networks via open interfaces.

In addition, HMF supports hybrid communication devices capable of using both TETRA and MCX services. This opens up entirely new possibilities for emergency services: classic push-to-talk functionality is enhanced with broadband applications such as video conferencing, database queries, or access to digital situation maps.

 Safety that creates trust

In public safety, it’s not only speed that matters, but also security and reliability. HMF solutions meet the highest standards for data protection, encryption, and network stability. Interoperability tests conducted as part of international MCX Plugtests™ have repeatedly confirmed compliance with European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI) requirements.

For emergency services, this means whether it’s voice communication, data transmission, or live video streams—all information remains protected while still being available in real time.
