Bosch Plans To Acquire US Chipmaker TSI Semiconductors

Bosch is increasing its semiconductor manufacturing capacity to meet the rising demand for computer chips for electric vehicles. Bosch recently made the announcement that it is purchasing the US chipmaker TSI Semiconductor and investing $1.5 billion in upgrading TSI’s production lines to produce silicon carbide semiconductors to boost the adoption of EVs.

Currently, the company focuses primarily on developing and mass producing chips for use in the mobility, telecommunications, energy, and life sciences sectors on 200-millimeter silicon wafers. As the automotive industry transitions to green zero-emission EVs, Bosch has been hard at work changing its business. To meet the rising demand for EVs and facilitate the transition, Bosch has heavily invested in developing new products like electric drives, powertrains, and charging solutions.

Starting in 2026, silicon carbide-based 200-millimeter wafers will be used to manufacture the first chips in a facility with about 10,000 square meters of clean room space. Bosch has been producing silicon carbide (SiC) chips since 2021 at its Reutlingen location in Germany, so the company knows what it takes to make them.

By the end of 2030, Bosch will have greatly expanded its global offering of SiC chips thanks to its steady semiconductor business expansion. The demand for these unique semiconductors is particularly high due to the global expansion and acceleration of electromobility.

“With the acquisition of TSI Semiconductors, we are establishing manufacturing capacity for SiC chips in an important sales market while also increasing our semiconductor manufacturing, globally. The existing clean-room facilities and expert personnel in Roseville will allow us to manufacture SiC chips for electromobility on an even larger scale,” says Dr. Stefan Hartung, the Bosch board of management chairman.

A full suite of connected access solutions from ASSA ABLOY secure Helsinki Airport

London, May 2023 – Controlling access into and around Helsinki Airport is a complex task. Around 15,000 people work there; daily pre-pandemic passenger numbers hovered around 60,000 to 70,000. Airport managers chose electronic and electromechanical locks, keyless padlocks and readers to secure the site and improve access management.

Safety for staff of operator Finavia and the airport’s customers is paramount. For obvious reasons, only authorized people should have access to many areas. The safe management of movement — by passengers, staff and contractors — is critical to Finavia’s mission to deliver an efficient service in Helsinki.

To enhance user convenience, they sought new access solutions to help facilitate adoption of keyless security at the airport. Finavia also require solutions which provide compatibility: They secure all types of opening, from doors and cabinets to fences and cargo. Devices must integrate seamlessly with their Lenel access control system.

“Safety, functionality, durability, security of supply and usability were the reasons we chose the ASSA ABLOY solution,” explains Kari Mäkinen, Senior Access Control Specialist at Helsinki Airport.

A single supplier, a vast range of connected access control solutions

Working with ASSA ABLOY gave Finavia the broadest possible choice of solutions to meet their complex security needs.

With Aperio H100 battery-powered handles, many types of airport door are now connected to their access control system. These Aperio devices with inbuilt RFID capability were easy to install — without the cabling that traditional devices require.

“Now we see in real time who will open the lock and when, and we can modify and grant access rights — remotely,” says Kari Mäkinen.

Authorized building users come and go with programmable, secure ID cards. It’s much more convenient than a mechanical key: “The access cards of both Finavia personnel and staff of other companies are easily programmed with necessary access rights,” he adds.

“When employees change, their access is disabled. Or if the card is lost, it can be completely removed from the system. With mechanical keys, that process is much harder.”

Multiple connectable ASSA ABLOY solutions are deployed alongside wireless Aperio and CLIQ Protec2 CLIQ electromechanical door devices. Keyless, mobile-operated ABLOY padlocks secure fencing and cargo. An antimicrobial coating on ABLOY door automation buttons helps to prevent germ spread and reassures staff.

The availability of all these solutions from a single manufacturer — easily used with their existing access control solution — helped Finavia to create a unified, integrated system at Helsinki Airport so passengers pass through safely on the way to every corner of the world.

WEBINAR: 2023 – Trends in Access Control

Digital transformation in access control continues to advance. With the help of new technologies, access control evolved into an inevitable part of providing organizations with additional benefits beyond security.

According to last-year a&s Group survey, several technologies stand out. Mature and suitable for use are multimodal biometrics, mobile access control, and multifactor authentication, while the same cannot be said for cloud access control, and partly for unimodal biometrics.

Interestingly, the market continued to adapt to the trends brought about by the pandemic. For example, contactless solutions have become the norm in the last two years. Even as the pandemic subsides, the market shows no interest in reverting to fingerprints and other legacy technologies.

Concerning the trends and innovations, a&s Adria will organize a webinar in partnership with HID, Suprema, ABLOY, and Špica Group. The webinar’s focus is to discuss the above-mentioned technologies and solutions.

WHOLE SECURITY AND FIRE PREVENTION WORLD AT SICUREZZA 2023

SICUREZZA 2023, scheduled for November 15-17, seven months before its opening confirms its pivotal role in the European Security and Fire Prevention market. With more than 250 companies registered, from more than 20 countries, and more than 80% of the trade show area already occupied, it is already established as an international hub and fully representative of the global merchandise product range.

Milan, April 28, 2023. SICUREZZA 2023 is once again a primary reference point for security and fire prevention professionals. Scheduled to take place at Fiera Milano from November 15 to 17 2023 and supported by industry stakeholders, SICUREZZA already counts more than 250 registered companies from 20 different countries and over 80% of the trade show area already occupied. The confirmed brands also include important returns and several new entries, accounting for 30% of the attendance. Thus, all sectors of the market are represented, confirming SICUREZZA as a key event for business development, networking and professional training.

The international top buyer recruitment project has also gotten off to a flying start, with membership from 25 countries and especially a strengthened presence from Eastern Europe, the Mediterranean Basin, the Middle East and North and South Africa.

Digitalisation, integrated and customised intelligent systems will be the central focus of the entire event, to provide professionals and realities from across the industry the opportunity to speak and at the same time connect: CCTV, Intrusion Detection, Fire Prevention, Access Control, Passive Security, CyberSecurity.

Like every edition, the training programme will be rich, providing a unique opportunity to learn about the most advanced solutions, to discover new skills and expertise, and to keep abreast of trends, regulations and scenarios.

CCTV: IOT AND DATA SECURITY

As part of the progressive rise of the security market, and in particular of the CCTV sector, the drive towards IoT technologies, device integration and consequently data security, is definitely leading the way.

Artificial intelligence and deep learning have indeed become an integral part of video surveillance and, as we will see at SICUREZZA, will continue to be key themes.

It is no coincidence, therefore, that an increasing variety of vertical markets – retail, transport, education, government and finance – are showing growing interest in the development of video surveillance systems, which have multiple functionalities and at the same time provide multi-level cyber protection.

ANTI-INTRUSION: INTERCONNECTION AND TRAINING

The anti-intrusion sector is now facing a progressive push towards digital, as well as the specific requirements of Smart Home and Smart Building.

Compliance with European directives, comfort, interconnection and cloud are the features of the new solutions; and remote control intrusion detection systems are leading the way.

These systems become advanced architectures capable of managing multiple functions such as alarm, video surveillance, home automation and access control simultaneously. For this reason, design, development and adaptation to standards are particularly important, but so too is the training of installers, who are the link between end users and manufacturers. Today’s networks of installers must be fully valorised and educated, through certifications and training programmes, as will be seen at SICUREZZA 2023, which has always provided a full training programme.

FIRE PREVENTION: BETWEEN REGULATION AND DIGITISATION

The global fire market is a vital sector for the safety of people and property worldwide. Made up of a wide range of products, services and solutions for fire prevention, detection and extinguishing, it is a complex system where constant attention to regulations and global market accreditation are crucial.

The global fire market is expected to see a significant increase in demand by 2027 due to the ever-increasing requirement for safe buildings and the need to comply with constantly evolving local, national and international regulations.

Digital and wireless solutions have made it possible to develop increasingly sophisticated and customised systems capable of constantly monitoring buildings and facilities, as well as optimising the maintenance and management of installations.

Many companies attending SICUREZZA deal with this vast array of regulations, practices and innovations, making the trade fair an opportunity for in-depth analysis and discussion for each industry sector.

ACCESS CONTROL: FAR MORE THAN THAT

Biometrics, QR-CODE, Bluetooth or NFC access systems are just some of the many and most recent technologies applicable to access control, making it essential to stay abreast of new market proposals for effective management of security and user flows within buildings.

After all, electronic systems have broadened the horizon of access points to include new features, ranging from attendance management to risk prevention and security efficiency; complex solutions that confirm the central importance of integration and interconnection.

SICUREZZA will be an opportunity to assess how the sector is evolving, which application areas are most in demand and the latest developments on the technology front.

PASSIVE SOLUTIONS AND ENERGY EFFICIENCY

In increasingly modern and high-performance architectural structures, passive security systems also have to adapt in the name of innovation, ensuring safety, but also design.

These three elements are required to coexist, as confirmed by many of the companies representing the supply chain that have already registered for SICUREZZA 2023, which opens a window on another important issue, that of combining these aspects with energy efficiency and sustainability, which are now more fundamental than ever.

THE CYBER SECURITY ARENA, AN ESSENTIAL APPOINTMENT

SICUREZZA 2023 wants to provide a joint response to digitisation in the security sector and the related updating, which is now the foundation of any activity in the supply chain. So the Cyber Security Arena returns. This is a trade show and training area set up by Business International, the content division of Fiera Milano, where experts, national security experts, academics and companies will analyse trends, share best practices and present the latest innovations on the subject.

The goal is to create a concrete space for in-depth study and training dedicated to professionals in the sector, that will be quick and vertical. Here, solutions and case histories for all areas of application will be presented, thus providing visitors and users with the complete and practical approach that has always characterised SICUREZZA’s offer.

The appointment for an all-round market review will be at Fiera Milano from November 15 to 17. For professionals interested in visiting the event, ticketing is already available online at sicurezza.it.
