Bosch expands MEMS line-up with Arioso acquisition

Bosch is expanding its expertise in MEMS (micro-electro-mechanical systems) micro speakers and strengthening its market position as leading provider of sensing solutions for consumer electronics with an acquisition. Arioso Systems, based in Dresden, Germany, is to become part of the Bosch Sensortec GmbH. Agreements to this effect were signed by Bosch and Arioso Systems.

Arioso Systems is one of the world’s most innovative providers of MEMS micro speaker technology. The technology is also a beneficial complement to Bosch’s MEMS sensor portfolio for wearables and hearables. The unique and innovative technology concept from Arioso Systems combined with the long-lasting experience from Bosch Sensortec to develop a technology to high-volume consumer electronics market maturity is expected to shape the emerging global MEMS micro speaker market. Manufacturers of TWS (true wireless stereo) earphones and other hearable devices will benefit from a sound generation with significant less power consumption and a smaller form factor, which means an expanded battery run time and easier system integration.

Arioso Systems developed a novel audio transducer technology, where sound is generated through movement of vertically oriented lamellas inside a silicon chip. Unlike conventional membrane, Arioso Systems technology uses the chip volume rather than surface. Therefore, it is possible to build a miniatured MEMS micro-speaker to generate up to 120 dB SPL (sound pressure level) out of 10mm2 active area.

“The whole Arioso Systems team is excited to become part of the most powerful global provider of sensing solutions and to take the next step in expanding our leading-edge technology,” says Hermann Schenk, CEO of Arioso Systems. “Joining our forces means we can leverage the full potential of our MEMS micro speaker technology.”

It has been agreed that any project details such as the purchase price will not be disclosed. The acquisition is subject to approval by the antitrust authorities.

Europe lags behind North America in Smart Homes race

According to the latest market research from Berg Insight, the European market for smart home systems is still behind the North American market in terms of market penetration and maturity. However, the market has now grown to become almost as large as the North American market.

Smart home and home automation systems include a wide range of solutions for controlling, monitoring and automating functions in the home. Berg Insight’s definition of a smart home system is one that is accessible from remote and includes a smartphone app or a web portal user interface. Devices that only can be controlled and automated locally, through switches, timers, sensors and remote controls, are thus not included in the scope of this study. Smart home systems can be grouped into seven primary categories: security and access control systems; energy management and climate control systems; audio-visual and entertainment systems; lighting and window control systems; healthcare and independent living systems; home appliances and service robotics.

Most advanced market is US

The North American smart home market recorded strong growth during 2021. The installed base of smart home systems increased by 18.0 percent to reach 223.2 million at the year-end. An estimated 30.0 million of these were multifunction or whole-home systems whereas 193.2 million were point solutions designed for one specific function. As some homes have more than one smart system in use, the installed base totalled an estimated 51.3 million smart homes at the end of the year. This corresponds to 35.8 percent of all households, placing North America as the most advanced smart home market in the world. Between 2021 and 2026, the number of households that adopt smart home systems is forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 7.8 percent, resulting in 74.6 million smart homes. Market revenues reached US$ 36.7 billion (€ 31.0 billion) in 2021, an increase of 16.4 percent year-on-year. The market is expected to grow at a CAGR of 11.7 percent between 2021 and 2026, reaching US$ 63.7 billion (€ 53.9 billion) in yearly revenues at the end of the forecast period.

Europe lags behind in maturity

The European market for smart home systems is still behind the North American market in terms of market penetration and maturity. However, the market has now grown to become almost as large as the North American market. At the end of 2021, there was a total of 167.7 million smart home systems in use in the EU27+3 countries, up 22.9 percent year-on-year. Around 20.0 million of these systems were multifunction or whole-home systems whereas 147.7 million were point solutions. This corresponds to around 53.7 million smart homes when overlaps are taken into account, meaning that 23.0 percent of all households in Europe were smart at the end of the year. The number of European households to adopt smart home systems is forecasted to grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 13.7 percent during the next five years, resulting in 99.7 million smart homes by 2026. Market revenues grew by 30.9 percent to € 29.7 billion (US$ 35.1 billion) in 2021. The market is forecasted to grow at a CAGR of 15.5 percent between 2021 and 2026 to reach € 61.1 billion (US$ 72.2 billion) at the end of the forecast period.

Wide mix of players

A point solution will in many cases constitute the consumer’s first smart home purchase. The most popular point solutions to date, in terms of sold units, include smart thermostats, smart light bulbs, smart plugs, connected security cameras and voice controlled smart speakers. These products are marketed by incumbent OEMs such as Signify, Resideo, Danfoss, Belkin, Chamberlain, Schlage and Assa Abloy and newer entrants such as Ecobee, Sonos, Arlo, Nuki, Mysa, Ikea and Wyze Labs.

In the whole-home system market, traditional home automation vendors such as Crestron Electronics, Control4, Savant Systems, eQ-3 and Loxone are facing new competition as companies from adjacent industries have entered the market. Communications and security service providers such as ADT, Vivint, Comcast and Brinks Home Security (Monitronics) have established themselves among the largest whole-home solution vendors in North America. Major vendors in Europe include Centrica, Somfy, Deutsche Telekom and Verisure.

Dahua Technology contributed to the Winter Olympics

The Beijing 2022 Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games have come to a successful end, with China setting a new medal record in its history of the Winter Olympics. Dahua Technology took on the responsibility of securing Yanqing’s Olympic Venues and Shougang Park. Guided by the “Winter Olympics of Science and Technology”, Dahua fully integrated many digital intelligence technologies, such as video Internet of Things, universal sensing, AIoT and AR, into this grand event, making great contributions to the success of the 2022 Winter Olympics.

 Challenge

Located 75 kilometers northwest of Beijing’s city center, Yanqing has two competition venues, the National Alpine Ski Centre and the National Sliding Centre, and other supporting facilities, such as Yanqing Olympic Village and Publishing Center. The entire zone is featured with complex terrain and a changeful climate. Another competition venue Big Air Shougang was located in Shougang Park. It staged the freestyle skiing and snowboard Big Air competitions at the Games. Big Air Shougang is the world’s first permanent venue for Big Air. Following the Winter Olympics, the venue will be used for various sports competitions and athlete training. Meanwhile, many Olympic landmarks, such as offices for the Organizing Committee of the Winter Olympics and training venues, have been set up in Shougang Park. The security of the wide range of roads, public areas, all kinds of venues and supporting facilities in the park was a top priority.

Solution: Safeguard the Yanqing Venues with intelligent systems

Dahua conducted several surveys in Yanqing Zone and tailored various intelligent systems such as intelligent traffic camera, AR panoramic solution, walk-through metal detector, ecological environment monitoring system and so on for mountain scenarios. This not only provided a security guarantee for the Winter Olympics events, athletes, audience and staff, but also facilitated the security management of Yanqing’s Olympic venues by improving the overall prevention, early warning and management efficiency.

The mountain road to Yanqing’s Olympic Venues is rugged and prone to traffic accidents at night, especially under rain and snow. By upgrading the intelligent traffic camera system in the core road sections, Dahua effectively solved the pollution caused by the white light explosion and flash at night on mountain roads, improving the safety of drivers and greatly reducing the incidence of traffic accidents. Meanwhile, Dahua also realized real-time sensing and intelligent management of vehicle entry and exit, which improved the road traffic management, traffic safety and civilized travel during the event.

According to the geographical features of Yanqing Zone and the complexity of management, Dahua innovated and deployed AR panoramic solution. Combined with the full-realm sensing ability of IoT, Dahua created a large live map that displayed the venues and surrounding infrastructures. Through the panoramic map, the staff were able to supervise the overall dynamics and details of the competition area at any time to conduct emergency operations and improve management efficiency and safety. Dahua walk-through metal detector appeared at the entrances of various venues, to help with fast temperature monitoring, intelligent identification and early warning of not wearing a mask, and rapid detection of metal contraband. This speeded up the traffic and reduced potential security risks timely. The efficiency of security work was promoted at the same time.

Assistance in declaring the winner

The sliding events bobsled, luge, and skeleton are the fastest games in Winter Olympics. Racers moving through the complex and narrow course at super speeds present an extraordinary challenge to the judges’ scoring and of course to athletes’ safety as well. Dahua Technology developed an intelligent video tracking system based on our industry-leading intelligent video sensing capability. The system captured the fleeting video image of high-speed athletes sliding down the track, displayed the video images of athletes passing through different slopes at high-speed seamlessly and orderly, and recorded every detail of the entire competition. With zero interference to the racing tracks, the Dahua intelligent video tracking system provided data support for the athletes’ training before the competition and a strong basis for the referee’s decision and game’s fairness during the competition.

To facilitate the “ecological Winter Olympics”, Dahua intelligent environment online monitoring system was in place to collect environmental temperature, humidity, wind, wind direction, noise, atmospheric pressure, weather and other data of the competition area all the time, to help managers grasp the dynamic changes of various environmental factors in real-time, and provide environmental data support for the events.

In the management center, Dahua built up a digital intelligent management platform for Yanqing Zone by using video IoT and visualization technologies including Dahua high-definition LCD screen and distributed seat management system. In this way, real-time views and visual scheduling of the overall operation of the whole competition area were realized. Thus, real-time response and efficient command in the case of emergencies were achieved, while refined management and information decisions were supported.

Equip the Shougang Park with AI innovations

In Shougang Park, Dahua fulfilled the demand of intelligent management. By applying intelligent panorama, multidimensional sensing, access control management and other artificial intelligence innovations, based on a unified intelligent management platform, Dahua built a comprehensive modern safety management system covering all roads, public places and venues in and outside the Shougang Park.

It greatly realized the real-time warning of all kinds of risks in the park, contributed to the innovative upgrade of the security management mode of the park, comprehensively improved the comprehensive services and management of the Winter Olympics.

Result

On the field, the Winter Olympics athletes were competing fiercely for medals; outside the stadium, Dahua technical team was trying their best to provide services for both Olympic and Paralympic Winter Games in Yanqing Zone, Shougang Park, National Conference Center and other perimeter areas. They pushed their limits and accomplished the task of securing the Olympic venues successfully in more than two consecutive months.

The team delivered high-quality services including video technology development for specific events, solution formulation, installation and commissioning, and on-site technical support, helping to create a simple, secure and wonderful Winter Olympics.

Dahua provided security services with high quality and high standards. Based on technology innovations and scenario-oriented application of digital intelligence, it has contributed to the success of many wonderful urban activities and boosted digital intelligence upgrades in thousands of industries. In the future, Dahua will continue to focus on customer needs and create more products and solutions for customers through innovative technologies.

Telford Shopping Centre chooses PRAESENSA solution

On 25 acres of commercial space, Telford Shopping Centre in the UK offers a selection of retail stores, restaurants, as well as hotels and a cinema. Sound is a key part of the customer experience, from ambient music to customer announcements and safety messages. The shopping mall operator was looking to upgrade the existing public address system with a future-proof and IP-networked solution. Enter the new public address and voice alarm system from Bosch.

Next generation voice alarm system for retail environments

From the start, PRAESENSA managed to keep installation costs low for the new shopping center public address system without sacrificing performance. System integrators were able to refurbish the existing loudspeakers installed at Telford Centre across 16 zones via minor modifications on the end lines. This required only replacing the obsolete control equipment – including a cumbersome call station with analog buttons – and amplifiers for an upgrade to the latest generation of IP-based audio system.

The upgrade is most notable in the call station that puts personnel in full control per touch screen with an intuitive graphic user interface. Managed via OMNEO media networking technology, the software-based system combines recordings from various media sources, including ambient music in MP3 format, commercials from a message library, plus end-of-day mall closing messages running on automated schedules. In case of an emergency, the public address system integrates with the fire alarm system to play pre-recorded alerts and evacuation messages targeted to specific zones. At any time, shopping center security personnel can send live voice messages and manually trigger the evacuation protocol.

Secure and fail-proof from the start

Out of the box, PRAESENSA meets the latest standards as a fully secure IP solution. All control equipment is connected via Secure IP, including encryption and authentication for complete protection against eavesdropping and hacking. The system also fulfills the needs of shopping center operators for around-the-clock availability: All critical system elements are supported by built-in redundancy to avoid outages, plus fault notification within 100 seconds meeting EN54-16 standards.

“We were very pleased with the installation of the equipment by North which caused minimal disruption and they also managed to keep us operational whilst the Shopping Centre was open. We are extremely happy with the quality and operation of the new Bosch equipment and the team are finding the system easy to use. Its of paramount importance to have a reliable system and this is definitely ticking all the boxes,” said Chris Titley, Facilities Manager, Savills (Telford Centre).
