Idis Helps Turkish University Streamline Complex Surveillance System

Idis Solution Suite VMS has streamlined operations and transformed security for a 350-camera system at the Social Sciences University of Ankara (ASBU), in Turkey. ASBU’s historic city centre location, with its night-time economy, makes it the study destination of choice for around 5,500 students annually. But with such a busy site, the university also has to deal with an increased risk of incidents, including crime and anti-social behaviour.

A 350-camera surveillance system monitored 24/7 from ASBU’s dedicated control room, had been expanded several times over the years. However, the resulting mix of six different vendor brands had left the VMS struggling, with issues such as frozen live images, hard-to-manage data burden, and difficulty to control.

Idis integration partner 11S Savunma Sanayi ve Güvenlik Sistemleri was asked to devise the best upgrade route. In an on-site proof of concept demonstration, the company showed how Idis’s VMS, IDIS Solution Suite, (ISS Expert) could quickly register all the mix-and-match cameras and devices, including recorders and a 3×3 video wall.

 Complexity Issues Resolved

With the project now completed, the result eliminates the previous complexity allowing seamless control, full functionality of all cameras regardless of the brand, and transformed ease-of-use for operators. They can now control the system from their workstations as well as from the video wall, with browser features allowing the university’s fire system to display on the same screen. Idis Mapvue (demonstrated in the video) is also being added, with a schematic showing the locations of the cameras, to improve domain awareness and make navigational playback easier.

The Idis solution is easy to maintain and expand, and a further 100 cameras will be added in the next phase of the project when two renovated accommodation buildings will also benefit from upgraded surveillance.

 Easy Provision of Video Evidence

ASBU’s security team can now easily comply with requests from law enforcement agencies for video evidence. Bookmarked event recording makes it easy for ASBU operators to skip from scene to scene when reviewing recordings. “Idis Solution Suite solved all the problems we had with our complex and ageing system, with an easy upgrade that extends the life and performance of all our cameras,” says Zafer Buldu, Manager of Hardware & Technical Services, ASBU.

Koray Ozyildirim, Idis Turkey Country Manager said: Idis Solution Suite has turned ASBU’s cluttered and failing system into a powerful, integrated surveillance solution that is easy to use, adapt, and upgrade, with the assurance of an extended lifespan backed by the industry-best warranties.”

Rugged AI Cameras Help Secure Busy Port in Peru

MIC IP ultra 7100i cameras from Bosch were recently installed on around ten 40-metre-high masts to meet the high-security requirements at the port of Paracas in Peru. The port operators were looking for a video security solution to ensure reliable, high-resolution surveillance of an 11-hectare area, even when faced with the adverse weather conditions that are typical in the region, including stormy winds and extremely salty air.

“Our previous cameras from a different supplier were unable to meet our expectations. That represented a major security risk, as we weren’t technically equipped to reliably detect intruders and their potential criminal activities in sensitive areas involving the loading or unloading of goods at the port terminal and take the necessary action,” explains César Rojas, Operations Manager at the port of Paracas.

Special Challenges of Port Security

Thanks to MIC IP ultra 7100i cameras from Bosch with UHD (4K) resolution, 12x zoom, and optical image stabilisation (OIS), the port’s management team have found a solution that now satisfies all their requirements. MIC cameras are moving pan-tilt-zoom (PTZ) devices. Remote panning, tilting, and zooming from a control room gives them excellent coverage of large areas. These technical features won over the management team. “Thanks to ultra-high definition, we can detect intruders and see what they’re up to in sharp detail for the first time. As a result of optical image stabilisation, this is even the case if strong winds rock the masts with the cameras attached at a height of 40 metres, or if we zoom up to 12x in the very salty air,” says Rojas about the rugged and high-performance of the Bosch cameras.

Intelligent Cameras

The MIC cameras being used can even be “trained” to recognise user-specified target objects (both stationary and moving) so as to automatically alert the port’s security personnel of unusual activity. This AI-based intelligent tracking also makes it possible to determine the exact position of objects so that, in the event of an emergency, staff can get to precisely the right location faster.

The complete Parking management solution

Searching for a parking spot has become a habit and a nuisance for drivers. In fact, finding a place to park could take up an astounding 108 hours per year of every driver’s life. Additionally, the extra kilometres driven looking for a space cost up to 650 euro/ year. Considering that cars usually spend up to 95% of the time parked, this hardly seems worthwhile.

The kilometers spent circling around for parking spots also contribute to urban pollution, diminishing the quality of life for both drivers and pedestrians. As the number of cars on the road continues to rise, driven by an increasing standard of living and higher vehicle ownership rates, the critical importance of making parking more efficient rises.

Telecoms Giant Saves Time & Money With HID Technology

HID Global has successfully completed the implementation of HID Mobile Access and HID Signo readers in Claro, one of the largest wireless telecommunications companies in the world.

With several locations around the continent, Claro is the telecom leader in Argentina. There, the company has thousands of employees, so it was spending significant time and money maintaining stock for new credentials, replacing lost or broken ones, as well as purchasing supplies. Additionally, Claro saw the increasing need to improve traceability and ensure proper utilisation of the credentials given to Claro’s staff.

Upgrading the existing access control system into HID Mobile Access was a logical step in order to increase convenience and efficiency without compromising security. Not only would employees be able to use their mobile device as a credential to access ports, networks and services, but Claro would also be able to remotely manage their credentials in a centralised, simplified manner.

HID Signo readers were also part of the upgrade, as they offer reliable performance and security. Beyond its sleek, modern design, this advanced reader supports an unmatched range of credential technologies. For Claro, this means the system is more flexible and future-proof.

Finally, with the HID Origo platform, the company was able to optimise its access control system and, at the same time, improve credential management and administration of identifications. Through the online management portal, Claro administrators can now quickly create, manage, issue and revoke credentials through the cloud.

“With mobile credentials stored on smartphones, employees can access offices and other areas more efficiently and conveniently using a short-range gesture (tap) or a simple intuitive long-range “Twist & Go” gesture, all while minimizing the risk of losing the credential, as it is less frequent for people to borrow, forget or lose their phones,” states Héctor Hernán Lissandrello, Physical and Electronic Security Analyst at Claro.

So far, according to HID, the company has issued more than 800 mobile credentials and installed about 100 Signo readers in its facilities. It plans to fully deploy Mobile Access in the months to come.

The flexibility and security benefits of programmable key access control at manufacturing sites

London, September 2023 – A manufacturing facility is a tough testing ground for any access control solution. By their nature, premises usually require multiple different types of lock, including a range of cylinder types and sizes, as well as padlocks. They often need locks which work both inside and outdoors. For this reason, many manufacturing plants retain traditional mechanical locking solutions — sacrificing the added control which an electronic solution brings.

The right programmable key solution offers a flexible, powerful alternative. Key-based access control retains many advantages of mechanical security, notably the range of cylinders which manufacturing facilities need.

It supplements this with added convenience for users: Instead of wasting time looking for the right key, or carrying large bunches, a user’s electronic key is programmed to unlock every opening for which they have authorization — doors and cabinets, indoors or outside.

Headquartered in Germany, RheinfelsQuellen H. Hövelmann is a family-owned company with a long history. This beverage group has been run by the Hövelmann family since 1905 and is currently in its fourth generation. Its product range includes nationally distributed brands Sinalco, Aquintéll and Staatl. Fachingen, as well as others distributed within North Rhine-Westphalia such as Rheinfels Quelle, Römerwall, Burgwallbronn, Ardey Quelle, Urquell and Rheinperle.

A company like RheinfelsQuellen is always on the move: New divisions are established, employees relocate or processes change. Suppliers, contractors and the company’s own 650 personnel come and go. This means that access authorizations must change on a regular basis. At the same time, areas and locations to be protected require different security levels, and access control devices need reliable weather resistance in outdoor areas.

A single solution for manufacturing areas, offices and outdoors

For its Duisburg HQ and other locations around North Rhine–Westphalia, RheinfelsQuellen opted for an eCLIQ key-operated electronic access control system. In addition to administrative buildings, production facilities and outdoor areas are also secured with around 530 eCLIQ devices.

ASSA ABLOY’s eCLIQ is a fully electronic version of the CLIQ® programmable key access control solution. Cylinders offer a high level of protection against tampering and intelligent attacks. All eCLIQ keys are extremely robust, with a waterproof casing — and thus meet the high demands placed on outdoor access control by challenging environmental conditions.

This key-based access control system is managed by the CLIQ Web Manager (CWM), a flexible, easily scalable, cloud-based software. System data may be accessed at any time, and from any location, via the CWM interface. The software’s flexibility makes it especially suited to large access systems and/or for administering multiple locations which are geographically dispersed.

“We are very satisfied with eCLIQ and would choose this secure and flexible locking solution time and time again,” says Marcus Schlötels, Project Manager at RheinfelsQuellen H. Hövelmann.

New EFSG Standards Form Speeds & Simplifies Time to Market

EFSG, an association of European certification bodies operating in the fire and security sectors, and Euralarm’s Task Force EFSG have been working closely together on a common application form for EFSG certification. The form was published recently and can be used for making an application for multiple certifications.

The new form is intended to reduce the number of separate forms that manufacturers need to complete when submitting an application for certification with EFSG members. The common application form will allow one application to be accepted by all EFSG members followed by a central project management process within EFSG, which should help improve overall certification timescales.

This single form will be accepted by AFNOR, BRE Global, CNPP, DBI and Vds for applications to certify fire detection and fire alarm equipment to the EN 54 standards, smoke alarms to EN 14604 and power supplies to EN 12101-10 within the scope of EFSG’s mutual recognition agreement.

Step forwards

The common application form is a step forward. The promise is that the single applications form and the central project management process within EFSG support one-stop testing and improve the time to market for new and modified products. It contains all necessary contractual information of each certification body thereby removing the need for separate applications. The exception is BRE Global – their terms and conditions are provided with the quotation.

However, the success of the new form depends on the companies using it. Local work instructions and quality processes may require modification to use the new form. Euralarm supports the use of the common application form. Therefore, Euralarm calls on manufacturers to implement or incorporate the common application form in their processes. Meanwhile, the organisation also calls on EFSG to use the new process to drive improvements in the certification process.

The common application form and the accompanying appendices are available to download from the EFSG website. Incorporated into the form is a check box used to identify applications related to product changes implemented due to component shortages and which require fast-track certification.
