Frankfurt am Main, 08 March 2024. The modern building is intelligent, connected and as a result saves energy. In combination with alternative energy sources and efficient lighting solutions, emissions in the building sector can be drastically reduced. This makes a significant contribution to achieving climate targets. 2,169 exhibitors presented the latest developments in building technology and trends in innovative lighting design at Light + Building in Frankfurt am Main from 3 to 8 March 2024. Over 151,000 visitors travelled to the world’s leading trade fair for lighting and building-services technology.

“The atmosphere at the exhibitors’ booths, in the halls and throughout the exhibition grounds was simply fantastic. We are extremely pleased that so many exhibitors and visitors, as well as our long-standing partners, have continued the success story of the world’s leading trade fair for lighting and building-services technology in 2024,” summarises Wolfgang Marzin, President and Chief Executive Officer of Messe Frankfurt. He adds: “With the switch to renewable energy sources, greater efficiency and sustainability in buildings, the industry has key goals on its agenda. That’s why they used the platform intensively, especially in the first few days, to present and discover innovations and drive forward key topics. After all, if we want to achieve the climate protection goals, the building sector is an essential milestone. It is unfortunate that the rail and air transport strikes have already affected Messe Frankfurt’s third leading international event since the beginning of the year.”

Buildings of tomorrow and inspiring lighting solutions

Key topics are the electrification and digitalisation of homes and buildings in order to reduce emissions and reuse raw materials. At Light + Building, the industry presented the digital and electrotechnical infrastructure for this and, on this basis, showcased solutions for dynamic power control, energy storage systems and applications for connected security. One growing area is the range of e-mobility and charging infrastructure as well as innovations and products for decentralised energy supply systems and components.

Light plays an important role in the architecture of tomorrow. At Light + Building 2024, 65 per cent of exhibitors belonged to this sector. They presented high-quality lighting solutions for indoor and outdoor areas as well as dynamic room concepts. Modern LED installations ensure contemporary efficiency and either blend harmoniously into the architecture or emphasise the design elements. Lighting is to provide maximum visual comfort in all living and working environments. Thanks to the materials used, Acoustic Lighting combines a pleasant lighting atmosphere with sound-absorbing functions. Sustainability plays an essential role in both the materials used and the manufacturing processes. Many manufacturers design luminaires in a way that the raw materials used can be recycled at the end of their useful life.

Light + Building 2024 in figures

The high-quality, extensive and international portfolio of lighting and building-services technology impressed the visitors. 95 per cent of them were extremely satisfied with what was on display and stated that they had achieved 93 per cent of their trade fair attendance targets. The most came to the innovation meeting point from Germany, China, Italy, the Netherlands, France, Switzerland, Belgium, Austria, the UK, Spain and Poland. They came from a total of 146 countries – including, for example, India, the USA, the United Arab Emirates, Australia, Brazil and Singapore. The degree of internationality was thus 51 per cent. The level of internationality among the 2,169 exhibitors was also high at 76 per cent.

Meeting place for the social media community

The social media community also found its home at Light + Building. On 3 and 4 March, the leading content creators in the lighting and building-services technology sector gathered for the Power Creator Days. In addition to live podcasts, expert talks and case studies, visitors had the chance to pedal for a good cause and work together towards a high energy target. A total of 1,510 minutes were cycled on the six fitness bikes. The sponsors will convert the result into a cash donation for the Leberecht Foundation, which Messe Frankfurt will double. The exact amount will be announced on social media further to Light + Building.

The next Light + Building will take place from 8 to 13 March 2026 in Frankfurt am Main.

Voices from the industry

Alexander Neuhäuser, General Manager ZVEH (Central Association of the German Electrical and Information Technology Trades)

“Light + Building demonstrates how sector coupling can succeed through the necessary connectivity. The electrical trades integrate photovoltaics, storage, electromobility and heat pumps. They show how the energy industry requirements for controllable consumption devices (SteuVE) can be met and thus take account of the current transformation process. The good atmosphere at this year’s Light + Building 2024 was also noticeable at the joint stand of the electrical trades, which was very busy on all days of the event. The traditional partners’ evening was also a complete success, bringing together the partners of the electrical trades and the industry leaders. We were particularly pleased that so many young people once again took the opportunity to visit the E-House and the workshop street and gain an impression of what is feasible with smart and intelligently connected building automation.”

Wolfgang Weber, CEO, ZVEI (Electro and Digital Industry Association):

“In the context of climate goals and the economic situation of urgently creating more affordable living space in Germany, technologies are increasingly coming into focus. The exhibiting companies at Light + Building have impressively demonstrated how easily well-designed climate protection can even lead to greater economic efficiency in the operation of houses, buildings and entire neighbourhoods. This requires the right solutions, especially from the electrical and digital industry, such as heat pumps, controllable lighting, charging points and an energy management system. This is relevant – not just in Germany and Europe, but worldwide. Light + Building is the right place to present innovative, climate-friendly technologies and solutions and to engage in dialogue with trade visitors from Germany and abroad.”

a&s Adria at the Light + Building 2024 Show

From old buildings in need of modernisation to energy-intensive office buildings, there is much to do in the building sector en route to greater climate neutrality. In Germany, this sector accounts for around 30 percent of CO2 emissions. For many years, however, the building sector has failed to reach the CO2 reduction targets set by the German government.

Around 2,200 exhibitors are ready to present their innovative technologies at Light + Building in Frankfurt am Main from 3 to 8 March 2024.

Over the coming six days, the spotlight at the world’s leading trade fair for lighting and building-services technology will be on solutions for greater sustainability. Around 2,200 exhibitors are showing modern lighting design, smart building-services technology, technologies for efficient energy management, the connection of PV installations, charging stations for electrical mobility and the electrical infrastructure. These innovations have the potential to save up many millions of tonnes of CO2 by 2030.

Light + Building is the international platform for the electrical industry and lighting designers, and attracts companies from all over the world to Frankfurt am Main. The level of internationality among the exhibitors has reached 77 percent. After Germany, the majority of exhibitors come from Italy, China, Türkiye, Spain, Poland, Austria, the Netherlands, the United Kingdom, France and Greece.

“It is fascinating to see how many innovations for our homes and buildings are coming onto the market. Everyone can expand their knowledge in personal discussions at Light + Building. After all, if we want to achieve the reorientation towards greater sustainability in the building sector, everything has to dovetail and function efficiently”, says Wolfgang Marzin, President and Chief Executive Officer, Messe Frankfurt.

Under the motto ‘Be electrified’, Light + Building shows how intelligent energy management in buildings interconnects and optimises power-generating plant with household consumption. This has an energy-saving potential of up to 30 percent. Renewable energy generated in or on the building itself improves the carbon footprint. Increasing e-mobility is also reducing CO2 emissions. Thus, demand is growing for charging points at private households, apartment buildings, shopping centres, offices, etc. Against this background, solutions for electric charging infrastructure will be presented and discussed at Light + Building 2024.

In cooperation with its partners, the German Electro and Digital Industry Association (ZVEI) and the Federation of the German Electrical and Information Technology Installation Trades (ZVEH), Messe Frankfurt has set out the agenda for the lighting and building technology sectors with three top themes: ‘Connectivity’, ‘Sustainability’ and ‘Work + Living’. They are the content guidelines for the accompanying events during the show and include a variety of lectures, guided tours and award ceremonies to be held in the lighting area of the Design Plaza in Hall 3.1 (Stand B50). The Building Plaza in Hall 9.0 (Stand D60) focuses on building-services technology topics.

The Technology Forum will be the meeting place for an exchange of ideas and information between exhibitors and visitors against a backdrop of lectures and panel discussions focussing on electrification and digitalisation of the building sector. The ZVEH is also represented by the E-House in Hall 11.0 (Stand C07/D07). There, the spotlight is on ‘sustainable energy supply’ and ‘smart health’.

Intersec 2024 Experts Affirm ME Aviation’s Resilience, Prioritising Passenger Safety

  • Amidst a robust post-pandemic surge in passenger traffic, regional airports committed substantial investments in cutting-edge tech and infrastructure
  • Geopolitical tensions, conflicts, and rising cyber threats drive significant aviation security upgrades across the Middle East
  • The vision for the future of aviation security in the Middle East is to be discussed at the Security Leader’s Summit at Intersec 2024 at Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC) from 16 – 18 January

As latest International Air Transport Association (IATA) figures show that the strong post-pandemic passenger traffic trend continues in the Middle East, with regional airlines seeing a 26.6% increase in September traffic compared to 2022, emerging security challenges and threats to the aviation industry in the Middle East will be discussed in detail at Intersec 2024, which takes place from 16-18 January 2024 at the Dubai World Trade Centre (DWTC).

According to Aaron Le Boutillier, Regional VP at ASIS International and CEO at LBG Le Boutillier Group, who is speaking ahead of the Security Leader’s Summit at Intersec 2024, these threats can be defined as political instability and conflicts, geopolitical tensions and the increased threat of cyber-attacks, and the need to develop advanced cybersecurity protocols and technologies to protect critical infrastructure, aircraft systems and passenger data.

“The success of regional aviation security can be attributed to the fact that some of the major airports in the Middle East region, like Dubai International Airport, Abu Dhabi International Airport and Hamad International Airport, have invested heavily in advanced technologies and infrastructure, such as state-of-the-art passenger screening systems, advanced baggage screening technologies, and increased development of security personnel, now showing tangible results,” he said.

Another key trend is the strong collaboration with international organisations, such as the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO) and the Transportation Security Administration (TSA), to enhance aviation security with a clear strategy to constantly update and implement regulations and security protocols to align with international standards.

Le Boutillier added: “International collaboration among airlines, airports, and regulatory authorities in strengthening aviation security is key to improving overall aviation security, and this is seen in the Middle East with strong alliances with ICAO and TSA, which ultimately lead to more efficient security processes.”

Discussing how the aviation industry can balance stringent security measures with providing passengers a seamless and pleasant experience, Le Boutillier highlighted several strategies available to stakeholders, such as a more efficient pre-screening process and biometric systems, which could expedite security checks and better training and communication.

According to an IATA study, 75% of passengers want to use biometric data instead of passports and boarding passes, and over a third have already experienced using biometric identification in their travels. In November 2022, Emirates Airlines introduced the fast-track of international passengers using biometric data, while Riyadh Airports Company, which operates and manages King Khalid International Airport, successfully ran trials of a facial recognition technology in February 2023.

Grant Tuchten, Portfolio Director at Intersec organiser Messe Frankfurt Middle East, said: “The aviation industry has undergone a massive digital overhaul in the last few decades, with technological advancements significantly enhancing safety, efficiency, and service quality, but also expanding the potential for cyber threats. To maintain safety and reliability, the Security Leader’s Summit allows the industry to deepen its understanding of security measures and enhance cooperation among stakeholders to counter these risks effectively. Intersec will also host world-leading technology exhibitors supporting innovation within the aviation security sector, including Nuctech, Linev System, Astrophysics, Garrett, and new exhibitors Rapsican and Vita Detection.”

Intersec’s 25th edition, held under the patronage of His Highness Sheikh Mansoor Bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, marks a quarter-century of innovation in security tech. With 1,000 exhibitors from 60 nations and 45,000 trade visitors, the event is a global hub for security, safety, and fire protection industries.

This jubilee edition will host a diverse range of conference programmes like Cyber Security, Safety & Health, Fire & Rescue, with features like the Thought Leadership Pavilion and Intersec Awards.
