Even though digital conference solutions certainly have their advantages, the direct and personal contact to our customers and interested parties is simply irreplaceable in the context of an international trade fair. This time, the focus will be on our individual video security solutions, but also on new developments from the Smart Building and Mobility sectors,” says Christian Kaup, Head of Product Management & Marketing.

Extensive fair with short distances
Its bandwidth is what makes Security Essen so attractive for the security industry. With the areas of video; access, mechatronics, mechanics, systems & perimeter;fire, burglary & systems as well as services & digital networking security, all segments of the industry are to be found under one roof. “This successful concept stands for short distances, direct discussions and intensive professional contacts,” says fair project manager Julia Jacob. Security Essen offers companies numerous opportunities to present themselves to an international audience. Exhibitors benefit from individual stand options, theme-specific joint areas or time- and cost-saving complete packages.
The accompanying programme offers further added value for visitors and exhibitors. Together with the technical training institute Haus der Technik, Messe Essen is organising the two-day fire protection forum. The Digital Networking Security Congress is also scheduled for two days of the fair. Here, the speakers will focus on security in networks, IT security, interfaces and cyber threats.

Particularly in demand: access control systems and video security technology
Despite pandemic conditions, the security industry market developed well last year the Bundesverband der Sicherheitswirtschaft (BDSW) (German Federal Association of the Security Industry) reported an estimated increase in turnover of four percent to 9.21 billion euros* for its sector. The German market for electronic security technology grew by 1.6 percent to 4.695 billion euros in 2020. Access control systems (plus 4.3 percent) and video security technology (plus 7.1 percent) grew particularly strongly here*. ABI-Sicherheitssysteme sees a trend above all in products that are becoming smarter. “This development is caused, among other things, by the massive advance of cloud solutions. In addition, security technology will communicate more and more with building automation and partly merge,” is the assessment of sales manager Joachim Schairer.

Dahua TechMonth Featuring WizMind: Improve Retail Operation and Customer Service Through People Counting

Video surveillance is a must-have for any retail environment. It can help prevent potential theft and ensure the accuracy of Point of Sale (POS) transactions. In addition to security, there are other challenging tasks that modern brick and mortar retailers face on a daily basis: How to build customer profiles with accurate offline data and enable greater return on investment? How to control the flow of customers in the store? How to protect customer privacy? And the list goes so on. However, thanks to the continuous development in modern technology, various monitoring devices equipped with intelligent features are now available in the market to address these monitoring challenges.

The Dahua WizMind, for example, offers an array of human-based AI algorithms, including People Counting and Heat Map. These functions can assist retail owners in optimizing their day-to-day operations through intelligent analysis of customer flow. Users can flexibly customize the features of WizMind devices and solutions to better suit their actual business needs, while of course protecting people’s privacy at the same time.

If you are a retailer looking to optimize your shop operation, this article is perfect for you! Using the Dahua WizMind as an example, let’s take a look at the 5 ways you can improve the business operation and customer service in your store using people counting and heat map:

Limit In-store Capacity

Under the new normal, retailers – from grocery stores to big supermarkets and shopping malls – are overwhelmed by mandated customer flow restrictions. Why not let a WizMind 5 Series Camera sort this out? It can calculate the number of people entering and leaving the store based on the detection of moving human targets. Once the total number of in-store people hits the preset threshold, an alarm will be triggered and notifications will be sent to the administrator. Also, the real-time number of people inside the store can be displayed on a digital signage at the door, which helps improve customer experience and save labor costs.

For reference, check out this article about how WizMind IPC-HFW5442E-ZE helps the world’s oldest amusement park control customer flow.

Manage Queues at Cash Registers

A WizMind people-counting camera can discern how many people are gathering in a given area, making it ideal for monitoring of checkout lanes. At the same time, it can also keep track of how long they have then been standing on the line. By setting rules that can trigger the alarm, say three or more people standing in line for more than three minutes, store managers can be instantly alerted when they need to send more staff to the cash registers in order to reduce customers’ waiting time.

Compare Number of Shoppers with Number of Buyers

If people counting data at the store entrance shows that 100 people came into the store but POS data indicates that only forty of them actually made a purchase, then something must be done to keep this from happening.

With relevant data at hand, retailers can analyze what is happening in the store that affects their sales conversion. Are employees helping shoppers make better purchasing decisions? Does the layout of the store keep shoppers from finding what they need?

To alleviate this dilemma, retailers can avail the Dahua WizMind Fisheye Cameras with heat map function. It provides additional insight into the areas frequently visited by customers, which can help store managers to optimize the layout of their shop and create appropriate marketing strategies.

Reduce Loiterers Outside the Store

The WizMind people-counting camera can also detect the number of human-sized moving objects in an assigned “no loitering zone” and keep track of the detection time. If too many people linger in front of the store beyond the set time period, an alert can be sent to the store manager. This eliminates the need for staff to monitor loiterers outside the store, and automatically notifies managers if intervention is needed. It helps create a more secure and pleasant environment for customers entering the store.

Track Busy Times

“Power hours” are times when customers stream into the store in a seemingly endless flow. It is crucial to plan personnel schedules during these peak times in order to maximize sales. By collecting foot traffic data during the busiest hours of the day and times of the week, managers can efficiently organize staff allocation in the store and make sure that there are enough staff during peak hours. This enhances customers’ buying experience and encourages them to return.

Key Takeaways

Overall, the Dahua WizMind is more than just security devices and solutions. While providing early warning and playback for store managers to increase store safety, as well as aiding further analysis regarding customer complaints and employee activities, it also brings valuable data statistics to help business owners adjust their marketing and operation strategies more efficiently.

It is the edge-based segment that is expected to grow at a higher CAGR during the forecast period. Edge-based video analytics evolves with the emergence of new powerful in-built chipsets in cameras that offer higher computational capabilities at the edge. Such systems inform operators on a wide range of real-time video or audio events requiring attention and providing more sophisticated analytics, such as queue management and heat maps that offer new opportunities for business and traffic intelligence.

Advancements in deep learning and its integration with the edge system are also expected to drive the adoption in the coming years. Deep learning takes ML to another level based on neural network principles that impersonate the complexity of the human brain. Earlier, the functionality was mainly available at server-side processes, which would require videos to be decompressed and processed. Edge-based devices need external inputs to learn from before proving as a useful tool to recognise known objects and behaviours.

On-premises vs cloud analytics
The video analytics market is segmented by deployment type into on-premises and cloud segment. The on-premises segment accounts for a higher share of the video analytics market during the forecast period according to the analysis. This approach is mostly adopted for applications that involve the processing of sensitive and confidential data volumes. These data volumes include internal and external surveillance footage and video feeds of business operations that contain confidential information and crucial insights. In the on-premises deployment, companies have to install the required hardware parts, such as OS, storage devices, servers, cameras, and routers, as well as video analytics software. Several large organisations are deploying on-premises video analytics due to privacy and security concerns related to confidential data.

Dahua TechMonth Featuring WizMind: 3 Practical Monitoring Applications of Human-based Video Metadata

In surveillance monitoring context, video metadata refers to the structured details that you can possibly extract from a given video footage. It is a data that provides information about other data – a “data about data” in short.

Human-based video metadata, as its name suggests, are data derived from human targets in the monitored scene. It can be utilized based on user’s requirements to significantly enhance the management and operation of various application scenarios, while carefully maintaining people’s privacy at the same time.

To give you some insights into its practical usage, here are three conventional applications of human-based video metadata that you can adopt based on your own monitoring needs:

Search Targets & Generate Statistics
One of the most common applications of human-based video metadata is for target searching after an event. Intelligent surveillance devices, such as the Dahua WizMind products, offer Quick Target Search function that can locate suspects in time using their physical attributes. Target attributes include beard, glasses, mask, hat, etc., which are continuously being developed and increased to meet the requirements of various application scenarios. Irrelevant targets in the captured images are also filtered out by the back-end devices (IVSS, NVR) or by the platform. It can capture up to 640* targets (with attributes) per second with an impressive detection rate of 98%*.

In addition, another useful application of the human-based video metadata technology is for target statistics. WizMind counts in real time the human targets in the monitored scene and filters them based on target category and direction. The directions include A>B, B>A, or A<>B. And to top it up, it can also generate reports by year, month, and day. It can capture up to 96** objects per frame, providing a detection rate of 98%** and accuracy rate of 96%**.

Detect PPE Wearing
Wearing of personal protective equipment or PPE is a must in any construction site. Depending on the scope of the project, monitoring proper wearing of PPEs in the site could be a tough challenge to implement.

The latest PPE Detection Technology of Dahua WizMind can detect wearing of commonly used PPEs in construction sites including safety hats, protective vests, face masks, and glasses. It can even detect the color of the uniforms (top and bottom) of workers. When a violation has been detected, the site supervisor or manager can be notified via the DMSS mobile app. Similar to target searching and statistics functions, it also offers a detection rate of 98%**, with accuracy rate of 96%**.

*based on the maximum performance of WizMind IVSS7000-16M
**based on actual performance of WizMind IPC 7 series

Aid City Road Planning
Who would have thought that aside from vehicle-related data, statistics related to people on the street can also be useful in planning city roads? By collecting attributes of pedestrians, directions, and time periods, local road planning departments can design better roads tailored for road users and commuters.

One good example is the Dahua solution developed for a local organization in Ireland. Aside from motor vehicles and non-motor vehicles, metadata of pedestrians are also captured on main city roads, and streets around plazas. These data are then securely transferred to an SFTP server for further data analysis. The data summary are relayed to the local transportation department to help them plan and manage streets more efficiently.

Key Takeaways
Human-based video metadata can be effectively utilized to optimize monitoring operation of various application scenarios. Metadata based on human targets can be used to search suspects after an event, and to generate accurate statistics of the people in the monitored scene. Also, these structured data can be used to detect proper wearing of PPEs in a particular site, and help local transportation departments in planning and maintaining city roads to benefit the general public.
