Euralarm Supports European Smoke Alarm Day 2026
Euralarm, the European association representing the fire safety and security industry, proudly supports European Smoke Alarm Day 2026, taking place on 20 November 2026 as part of European Fire Safety Week 2026. The initiative aims to raise awareness of the life-saving role of smoke alarms and encourage wider adoption of smoke alarm protection in residential homes across Europe.
European Smoke Alarm Day is a joint campaign of the European Fire Safety Alliance (EuroFSA) and the Federation of European Fire Officers (FEU). The campaign seeks to increase awareness among citizens, policymakers and fire services about the importance of smoke alarms in reducing fire deaths and injuries in the home.
As a supporter of the campaign, Euralarm joins fire safety organisations, fire services and industry partners from across Europe in promoting one simple but crucial message: smoke alarms save lives.
Research highlighted by the campaign demonstrates the significant impact smoke alarms can have on household safety. According to the campaign information, people living in homes equipped with smoke alarms are four times less likely to die in a fire.
“The presence of a properly installed and maintained smoke alarm remains one of the most effective ways of protecting people from the devastating consequences of fire,” said Paul van der Zanden, General Director of Euralarm. “European Smoke Alarm Day provides an important opportunity to remind citizens, policymakers and housing stakeholders that early warning saves lives. Every home in Europe should be protected by reliable smoke detection.” Euralarm encourages homeowners, tenants and housing providers to test existing smoke alarms regularly and ensure that every home has adequate smoke alarm protection.
The campaign has three key objectives:
- To encourage more European countries to make smoke alarms mandatory in residential homes.
- To encourage national and local fire services to support vulnerable residents through smoke alarm installation programmes and awareness campaigns.
- To provide householders with practical information on selecting, installing and maintaining smoke alarms.
Euralarm believes that smoke alarms should form a fundamental element of residential fire safety strategies. While significant progress has been made in many European countries, smoke alarm requirements remain inconsistent across Europe, and awareness continues to play a critical role in encouraging homeowners and tenants to protect their families. The campaign’s overview of national regulations highlights that legislation varies considerably between European countries.
As homes become increasingly connected and residential environments evolve, early fire detection remains a cornerstone of fire safety. Euralarm therefore supports initiatives that promote greater awareness of smoke alarms, encourage best practice and help ensure that citizens across Europe benefit from effective fire detection in their homes.
Through its support for European Smoke Alarm Day 2026, Euralarm reaffirms its commitment to reducing fire deaths and injuries, promoting effective fire detection technologies and ensuring that every European citizen benefits from the protection that early fire detection provides.
