Biometrics at Airports: e-Gates Coming to Bosnia and Herzegovina, Futuristic Passenger Tunnel in Dubai

Bosnian airports Sarajevo, Mostar, and Banja Luka will soon introduce their first biometric e-gates for electronic passport control. The project, led by IDDEEA in cooperation with the Border Police of BiH and local airport authorities, aims to speed up border crossings and reduce congestion. Sarajevo Airport will provide the technical requirements, while the procurement and integration of equipment will be handled by the Border Police. In the initial phase, the system will be available to BiH citizens, with plans to later expand to foreign travelers.

The main advantage of e-gates is that passage takes only 15 to 30 seconds, significantly easing the workload of officers who can then focus on more complex security checks. Sarajevo Airport is also considering co-financing the project, as improving passenger flow is seen as a strategic priority. With this initiative, Bosnia and Herzegovina is taking an important step toward European aviation standards, following the examples of Zagreb, Belgrade, and major hubs such as Frankfurt and Amsterdam.

Meanwhile, Dubai has gone a step further by launching its “red carpet” tunnel – a biometric corridor that allows passengers to pass without a passport or boarding card. Powered by AI technology and advanced cameras, this world-first system identifies travelers in just 6 to 14 seconds, with up to ten people able to pass simultaneously. Developed by the UAE’s General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in cooperation with Dubai Airports, the tunnel is currently available at Terminal 3.

Although Dubai International is rolling out cutting-edge AI upgrades, its long-term future is limited, as all operations will eventually move to the new Al Maktoum International Airport. Until then, Dubai remains a global leader in futuristic travel solutions that are redefining the passenger experience.

IDIS eBook details the latest retail video applications and explores changing buyer priorities

The latest generation of AI video solutions is significantly outperforming conventional security systems in retail applications, achieving faster return-on-investment and delivering notable new benefits, says IDIS in its latest market assessment.

While conventional surveillance systems are focused largely on security and targeted at loss prevention, the latest AI-powered video solutions are proving to be as attractive to retail sales directors, marketing departments, and heads of finance, says the Korean video technology leader.

The latest IDIS educational eBook, Designing compelling retail video solutions to increase efficiency and boost profits, explains that while the market is highly fragmented, making it potentially difficult for buyers to evaluate which AI solutions offer genuine value, systems integrators can offer compelling, value-driven solutions by learning from the recent wave of successful multi-branch and international retail projects.

Drawing on IDIS’s ongoing successes working with a wide range of retail businesses, including fashion and beauty branch retailers, franchises, luxury boutiques, and supermarket chains, the eBook shows how systems integrators can easily design and quickly install solutions that deliver multiple benefits, not just improving loss prevention but increasing operational efficiency and boosting profits.

Better yet, the new range of AI-enhanced video solutions from edge cameras and AI boxes are not costly or complex to set up, and can now provide accurate answers to a wide range of intelligence questions that matter to retailers – including location footfall, customer capture rates and conversion rates, demographic data, dwell time, and data around seasonal and longer-term trends.

Koray Ozyildirim

Accurate, reliable, and granular data is becoming essential for centralized retail management teams, which oversee multiple remote branches and need a clear picture of each location’s performance, says Koray Ozyildirim, IDIS Türkiye Country Manager and one of IDIS’s retail experts. Only with accurate information can these decision makers know where to open, close, or expand stores; what rents are realistic in each location; and how local store managers and staff are performing versus other locations, which enables centrally informed decisions to support each store or regional branches with the right stock, promotions, marketing,  displays, and staffing levels.

“This new IDIS guide explains clearly how the latest AI video solutions are unlocking significant new value, what they are measuring, and what they are revealing,” Koray Ozyildirim adds. “Available to download for free, it is essential reading for any systems integrators working in today’s fast-moving retail space.”

EU Data Act Enters into Force, Raising Concerns Among Industry Groups and Companies

The European Union’s Data Act took effect on September 12, while the European Commission’s digital simplification package is expected only in December. This timing has raised concerns in the industry, as companies fear receiving contradictory signals from Brussels.

The law was adopted to ensure that users of smart devices, such as connected cars or smart home equipment, have fair access to the data these devices generate. Manufacturers are required to design products that make it easier for users to share their data, except in cases where doing so could expose sensitive business secrets.

In emergency situations, such as floods or cyberattacks, private companies may be obliged to share data with public authorities. However, industry associations warn that businesses must now comply with the Act even though some rules could soon be revised through the simplification package.

The Business Software Alliance (BSA), whose members include Amazon, Microsoft and Cisco, has warned that companies may invest in compliance efforts only to see the obligations modified shortly thereafter.

The Computer & Communications Industry Association (CCIA) echoed this view, with its representative Alexandre Roure stating that reopening the Act now would create even greater uncertainty. The European Commission, meanwhile, insists there is no connection between the simplification measures and the national mechanisms needed to enforce the Data Act. Since September 12, the rules have applied directly across all 27 member states, alongside national measures defining penalties and enforcement.

Violations of the Act can result in fines of up to €20 million or 4% of a company’s global annual turnover, whichever is higher. The Commission says it is working closely with member states to ensure timely and consistent implementation of the law.

New ISO/IEC Standard to Counter AI-Driven ID Morphing Threats

The International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) and International Organization for Standardization (ISO) have released a new standard to strengthen biometric systems against AI-enabled identity fraud. The document, ISO/IEC 20059, provides a framework for evaluating biometric system resilience to morphing attacks, a growing threat in border management and civil identification.

Morphing: A Market and Security Risk

Morphing attacks exploit the tolerance built into facial recognition systems by blending features of two or more people into a single digital image. Such manipulated photos can trick systems into authenticating multiple individuals under the same identity, enabling serious security breaches. Real-world cases in Europe – from a German activist securing a passport with a morphed photo to over 40 fraudulent passports uncovered in Slovenia – have highlighted how accessible editing tools and AI have lowered the barrier for this type of fraud. For the security industry, these developments underscore the urgent need for robust standards and certified solutions.

Defining Resistance and Detection

The standard introduces structured methods for assessing Morphing Attack Potential (MAP) and for testing Morphing Attack Detection (MAD) technologies, which are designed to flag altered images. It also specifies error metrics that quantify how well a system distinguishes between genuine and manipulated samples. For solution providers, ISO/IEC 20059 offers a benchmark to demonstrate the reliability of their systems under attack scenarios that mirror real-world use cases, particularly at automated border control points.

Industry and Regulatory Implications

For manufacturers and system integrators, compliance with ISO/IEC 20059 is likely to become a differentiator in tenders and government procurement. By embedding morphing-resistance testing into certification processes, authorities can raise security expectations and reduce vulnerabilities in national ID and border control projects. While the standard does not eliminate the challenges posed by increasingly sophisticated AI-based tools, it establishes a global reference point for both suppliers and end users. For the security industry, this move signals not only a technical advance but also a clear alignment between international regulation and market demand for higher assurance in biometric identity systems.

New Law in Bosnia and Herzegovina: Video Surveillance and Biometrics Under Strict Control

A new Personal Data Protection Law has come into force in Bosnia and Herzegovina, marking the fulfillment of one of the key requirements on the country’s path toward European Union membership. The law will begin to be applied on October 4 and is fully aligned with the EU’s General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). In addition to names and photographs, it now covers IP addresses, email addresses, and biometric data such as fingerprints, particularly when used for recording working hours.

One of the major novelties is the introduction of the “right to be forgotten,” which allows citizens to request the deletion of their data when there is no longer a legal basis for its processing. At a professional seminar in Mostar, Professor Marija Boban emphasized that “basic technical measures are no longer sufficient—every processing activity must have a clear legal basis, whether it is a statutory obligation, legitimate interest, or explicit consent.”

The law also sets strict penalties, ranging from 500 BAM (approx. EUR 250) for individuals to up to 40 million BAM or 4% of global annual turnover for companies, depending on the severity of the violation. It obliges organizations in both the public and private sectors to educate staff and appoint data protection officers. A common violation, such as sending newsletters without user consent, is now considered unlawful.

The Personal Data Protection Agency will be granted broader supervisory and sanctioning powers, while biometric data may not be processed without the explicit consent of employees.

Professor Boban stressed that “protection starts with education and clear procedures, and organizations that make an effort to comply may only receive warnings, while those that fail to act will inevitably face penalties.”

The law applies not only to digital systems but also to everyday practices, such as publishing employee information on company websites or the use of video surveillance, which must now be clearly marked and legally justified. Similar regulations have already been implemented in EU member states like Croatia and Slovenia, and they are now mandatory for institutions and businesses in Bosnia and Herzegovina as well. Experts underline that timely preparation is the best way to avoid heavy fines.
